I mean, that's getting on for XJ40 / X300 / X308 weights.

I'm very surprised at how much heavier the derv engines are.
"Doki" gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying:
Sorry, you think this is unusual?
Mondeo - up to 1,600kg Passat - up to 1,700kg A4 - up to 1,650kg C5 - up to 1,750kg
There is a shortage of pies for a wide radius around every single car factory.
I suppose it depends on what you think "woefully underpowered" is. A creamy smooth ~210 bhp in 1,800 kg machine isn't a much different power to weight ratio from stupendously quick hot-hatch killing machines such as the Passat
1.8T. Peugeot aim their V6 coupes at a different market to the hot hatch crowd or the four door saloon cars; it's for the more mature side of 50, the younger people trying to buy something different or (meh this isn't just because it's Steve) sales reps trying to avoid the usual boring company car suspects; performance isn't such a priority. Being able to accelerate away from the usual four cylinder riff-raff is handy.Personally, I like the 406, either the saloon or coupe. The 407 looks a little bit too "we designed this to look different" for my tastes _but_ I like the fact that it's distinctive.
I had a long look at 407 saloons when thinking about replacing the 9-3 diesel as the 1.6 diesel is pleasant enough and I don't give a toss about office car park badge boasting or devastatingly quick cross country driving as it won't be what I want to throw around.
Yes, you did. But they're still a good car if you look beyond the badge.
Aye, I really didn't believe I'd get a decent HDI or even V6 petrol within budget. But they depreciate very rapidly in the first couple of years before slowing down.
It'll still be worth about 50p in 6 years, though, which would be the predicted time of replacement.
"Doki" gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying:
Partly extra weight of the engine itself, partly extra sound-deadening and the like.

But still a Mk1 Golf short of a Disco3.
A quick comparison shows that the 407 coupe is only about 25cm shorter than the XJ, but it's 140kgs heavier.
The Passat is 5cm shorter than the 407 and a massive 342kg lighter!
How did that happen?
The XJ looks rather overweight for an aluminium car, and the Passat is a difficult comparison as the top spec diesel is only a 4-pot. Can't do a comparison with the 3.2 V6 petrol as that only comes in 4wd form - however it does bump the weight up to 1660kgs - still a fair bit lighter than the 407.
Doesn't help that the 407 has a heavy hifi setup - JBL speakers and sub. will add significant weight over the OEM stuff in the Passat, not sure what the Jag. comes with in 'poverty' spec form.
I wholeheartedly agree!!
I really like the 406 Coupe, and wasn't too sure about the 407 Coupe when I saw the photos in the brochure. Then I saw one in the flesh - they're stunning, and I think in a lot of ways a bit more 'manly' than the 406. And the diesel lump must be pretty awesome!
Do it Steve!!
It's around 250 KG /more/ than a new shape XJ8.
But it's 200Kg less than my Range Rover, so that'll be ok.
Jag uses Harmon Kardon stuff including subs.
But the XJ is aluminium, so it's surprising that it's as heavy as it is, really.
Same way the population is getting fatter, wider and more stupid.
They want "safe" NCAP 5 star cars, they have to accept cars will be fat heavy slugs.
We do now.
I think it only comes as GT spec, though.
My god, makes my 9000 look svelte @ 1325? 1395 kg And that includes full leather, electric seat motor weight, and drivers=20 and passenger airbag + the elk proof door girders. And it is big and=20 wide, and exactley the same length as the last gen passat.

To be fair, who cares? Why does it matter? It's not exactly meant to be a sports car, and won't be such as such anyway, as it's a diesel. So I say again, who cares...? I mean really... The only difference it makes, when you're not paying the fuel or taking it on the drag strip, is that it's probably safer for you as a result.
My car nails it by 2.1 seconds to 60mph from the figures in the back of Evo (against the 2.7HDi they have figures for) :-) 6.4 for me, 8.5 for it. But it is an Auto, and probably a much comfier place to be heh, whilst having like, 3 times my torque and better mpg :-)
You notice it a hell of a lot in the bends IMO.
This is why I need to drive a GT, really.
I reckon the active suspension damping will make a big difference.
Where it will be no worse than any other diesel barge. Been that it's a 407 with it's fancy wishbone setup and active suspension it may infact be better...
But rememeber, these cars aren't usually sold to people like us who value performance and handling over the cup holders :-) You're definately not going to be at home in that 406, but these are the sacrifices we must make in life. Be thankful you still have that Golf to drive when it's finished, and that the 406 is one of the better handling barges.
