'55 update...

so I'm probably not going to deliberately burn it to the ground, anymore... but the car will try to if I drive it too far. P/S is working although with some non-stock hose routing. Would still like to get my hands on an original pressure hose if I could, I'm going to have to R&R the P/S pump anyway. It works fine but leaks even more than the one I took off. D'oh! I guess I will have to put a seal kit in it. Maybe I should do both since I know the other one works well.

At least it is moving under its own power, again. Once I get a chance to drive it some more, I may have a Saginaw P/S setup for sale; I haven't driven it far/fast enough to see if I'm happy with the steering box I got from Lee, but it definitely works and is noticeably tighter than the one I took out.

If the leaking is coming from under the reservoir, make sure the bottom of it is flat when you replace the gaskets under there. I had mine apart 3 times to replace gaskets and it would start leaking again in short order. I finally checked the bottom of the tank with a straight edge and it was warped. A body hammer and 2x4 took care it and its been dry since.

I had a rebuild kit for mine but the o-rings that go between the center section and each end were the wrong ones. I took them to a bushing and bearing place and matched them up. The lip seal on the front shaft was about the only part from that kit that was the correct part. It was a old stock kit I picked up at a swap meet made by "varco".

These pumps are incredibly simple. A seal/bearing replacement can be done under an hour.
