Do little things up the value?

All good advice. The engineer is a friend of our guitar player, so we're getting 7 hours for $250. We're going there this afternoon to check things out. They have a drum kit there, so our drummer wahts ro make sure what's what (and it saves greatly on load out time!

We're recording about 8 songs of "our" own, and then going to finish our time with some 'live' covers so we have a demo to hand out for club owners, etc. We're doing three hours on Friday and 4 on Saturday.

Thanks for the info about the mikes, etc! We'll definitely check this afternoon!

I don't think anyone here would mind you advertising your CD once it is ready for sale....

I don't think we're going to sell it, I think it's just to get the material down.

Actually, I'm flattered, because the guitar player was working with another bass player (his GF bought my '95 Tercel) who blows me into the WEEDS! This guy is absolutely amazing! But, the guitarist let him go and called me! no hard feelings anywhere, I'm just surprised!

I'll try to put one or two of the songs somewhere. A lot of the stuff is run of the mill stuff (it's good, don't get me wrong) but there are a couple of exceptional songs. He wasn't going to record one of them, and just for fun we played it about a month ago and I said, Why don't we add that to our repetiore? He said, you guys LIKE that? YEAH!!!

I think it may be the onbe song that would make it if released.

And you gotta hear the MJ song! ;)

If you were looking for a used vehicle, would a pair of fuzzy dice and mudflaps with silhouettes of naked girls on them make you want to buy such a car? I didn't think so.

Hachi - you like the open air and fresh wind blowing about you....so did I when I was younger and owned one convertible after another (until one fellow decided he wanted something out of mine and opened up the top with a sharp object). Even though I have my sunroof now, it's seldom open, not even the 'moonroof', and to cool things off in a hurry, I just roll all the windows down for a couple of minutes. If you really like wind in your face, there's nothing like a motorcycle!

Well, this is true. I used to have a bright orange one with the headlight on all the time, and people STILL didn't see me.

I sold it and bought a dirt bike. Same wind in the face, and only bears to contend with...

Done a cover of 'Rock This Town' yet? If the lead guitar has good chops and you kick it into high gear, that one's fun.

And take a "20:20 Hindsight" hint from Mike Love: More ballads, Less falsetto. ;-)

Don't think that way - make it like you're going to sell it, put some effort into getting it right. And put as much original work on there as you can, covers are an afterthought to show how you can do with a known piece of work.

If it's going to be a Demo, you don't want to showcase bad work, do you? Record producers can be the most critical ears out there, if they don't like something about it you aren't going to even get a toe in the door.

Was that other bass player's name Pete Best? ;-P

I'll bet it's Real Life Vs. practice time that's the difference.

Remember: Huey Lewis and the News started out as 'only' a Bar Band. But they polished their chops, wrote and got some great original material, and developed a following...

Oh, and one more Very Important Point from the same friend: NEVER sign ANY piece of paper an "Artists & Repertoire" Man, producer or record company sets in front of you without having it reviewed by a lawyer in your employ fluent in music contract law, and all the major points are spelled out in detail. (Look for one in the phone book in L.A., N.Y.C. or Nashville TN where they congregate.)

The standard "7 Album Deal" is ridiculously one-sided in their favor, and the bad part is they can stick you with it by a simple reference to a 'standard contract' with a hand scribbled three line "Deal Sheet" on a single piece of paper - and the courts will allow it as a contract by reference.

You need to own the band name trademark, photos and publicity rights, music, the arrangements, the masters and recording rights all along the way, and you want to run the books and watch all the money, not the record company - even if you make less up front. Make sure it's spelled out in advance. Even if they scream and pout, YOU want to be the one that brings in the money and then pays THEM the part of the proceeds that they have earned and deserve for advancing your career - if the money flow goes the other way (like they want) you won't see a thin dime more than they deem to parcel out unless you force the issue in court.

They are feeding a corporate monster that is really good at bending the rules their way, and they hire creative accountants who can justify almost anything as a business expense. (If you get an expense invoice for $5K worth of Coke, it probably isn't referring to the carbonated beverage...) You'll have 20 people assigned to marketing your album till the 'excess money' in your account runs out, then they go drain another artist dry.

My street bike was red but I sold it for the same reason and got a (dual sport) dirt bike. It sure be funny if you had the same Supra (Burgundy) and bike. (Honda XR600R)

At least a bear will kill you ON PURPOSE! None of this "Ooh, I'm so sorry, I never saw him!" as your brains head for the gutter. The thing that has always bothered me about motorcycles (I used to have a Honda 350 twin) is that motorists see on in a parking slot and think " ...a f***ing motorcycle! Those jerks shouldn't be allowed to park there!" ...conveniently forgetting that motorcycles pay for registration and fuel taxes just like everybody else. But fourwheelers seem to think it's a real waste with all that space around the bike.

One of the worst motorcycle accidents I ever saw, just about this time of year; two riders riding side by side, the guy on the outside hit some pebbles that had been laid down over the winter, right in front of the guy alongside but slightly behind. He had noplace to go but over his buddy's head. There was an EMT walking on the sidewalk, but it was no use. I returned to my station at work just in time to...see his brains heading for the gutter...UGH!

"Cathy F." ...

I have a sunroof in the Sienna (it came with it) and we use it open in either position all the time. Yep, it does make noise. I find that during full open if I hold down that flappy thing in the front it is much quieter - I like to have my hand up there anyway. Why do they do that anyway? When I hold it down the kids in the back never complain of wind... Tomes

Yep, I was thinking private sale I suppose. I have never traded in a vehicle as I run them forever, and then sell off the remainder of it cheap. Tomes
