Transmission Trouble

Hi all,

I hope someone out there can help me with a question:

I own a '69 Bug. For a while it would pop out of 2nd gear, usually only after shifting from first. While starting off one day, it popped out, I tried 3rd - no luck. I got it back into 2nd, but had to physically hold the shifter to keep it from popping out while I pulled to the side of the road.

The transmission has no Neutral now, and Reverse is a forward gear. I can get neutral only by depressing the clutch.

I am wondering what the problem might be, how to fix it, and how much that might cost. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Kc

does it "feel" like its actually selecting gears? if it feels loose or "limp" then the shit coupler, under the inspection cover under rear seat, may have come loose....

but had to

This to me sounds like the sink rolls are out, dont quote me, i dont know nothing lol, but it happend in my explorer which is standard, kind of funny but i had a bungy holding my fourth gear. pretty much you need it rebuilt, or a new one. like i said research this first.

Joey,

How do you know if he has a "shit coupler"? His coupler may be in near new condition. :-D

LOL...you make a good point....after he clears up the "shit" coupler matter we should quickly move to his "shift" coupler..... and you guys think i cuss for fun, apparently it's automatic...

Thanks for all the replies. It feels like it selects only reverse (which goes forward now) and second. It is as if the other gears don't exist. I think my father in law checked the shift coupler, but it didn't change anything. His neighbor thinks it might be 'the rod', which apparently is a pain to fix.

It's starting to sound like it will be either expensive, time-consuming, or both.

It doesn't sound like a big problem to me.

remove engine and transmission.

pull the nose off the transmission and make sure everything is OK in there.. make sure the levers in the nose are doing what they should be.

It is probably a problem with the rod that goes from the nose of the trans. to the bottom of the shift lever. Make sure it is connected like it should be to the nose of the trans.

Check the adjustment of the shift lever. I had problems that were exactly like you describe. All I had to do was re-adjust the shift lever and it works fine for me now.

I had a similar problem with my splitty bus. One of the forks broke / rotted out. The ones that the engine/tranny bolts to with them big bolts. This cuased the engine/tranny to tilt and all your gear selection positions change !

Are your tail pipes level ? Just a thought !

Think that a rebuilt will solve this!
