Intermitant trouble starting 94 Concorde

I am having trouble getting my 1994 Concorde to start. This is an intermittent problem. It happens in any weather/temperature (air or engine). When I turn the key everything turns on like normal, but it wont start. The starter relay is working fine, I tested continuity on the appropriate terminals and the relay clicks when power is sent through it (and when the key is turned), you can hear the fuel pump turn on. I replaced the starter /integral solenoid and that did not fix the problem. I have checked the ground connections and they are all clean. The terminals on the battery are clean too.

The battery is old yet it still puts out over 12volts. Until today the car would always complete its start once the starter actually kicked in, this morning it stopped starting part way through cranking. That is why I replaced the starter.

The cars computer code is 1255 (battery recently disconnected , which it was).

My thoughts are.

1 if it were in the ignition switch then power would not flow to the starter relay which I have confirmed it does by hearing (and feeling) the click when the key is turned.

  1. The starter is new and still the same problem. The ground appears tight as the ground wire goes directly from the starter to the negative battery terminal.

  2. The battery may be weak but then I would assume that it would try to crank but just click, like when the battery is dead.

  1. According to the wiring diag. the only path that the current flows is through the ignition to the starter relay, from there to the starter. and there is a direct source from the battery+ to the starter.

  2. If it were any other relay misfiring then the car would crank but not turn over.

  1. The push on solenoid connector seemed a little cruddy, I cleaned it out with a pin before I re connected it to the new starter and it looks ok.

Does anyone have any ideas?

One or both battery cables has an internal break. Replace the cables.
