(OT) Thanks NewMan - re: individual.net news service

Some of you may remember a couple of threads I started over the last year about my disappointment in, and quest for, finding a reliable news server. My ISP doesn't seem to be able to find one either. I had resorted to using two different free servers in addition to my ISP with the philosophy that, statistically, the chances of at least one of the three working at a given point in time would be pretty good. Wrong!

Both "free" servers (aioe.org and thegreatnowhere.com - good name for them, eh?) have disappeared from the map totally, and the server that my ISP uses still sucks.

In the second and last thread about this, NewMan recommended a non-free server called individual.net

out of Germany. But hey - at $10 euros/year - less than $1/month, I decided to sign up. So far so good, and with them being supported with real money, they may feel some obligation to provide stable service, and should be less likely to go under. It was a minor pain to sign up - they don't accept paypal or credit cards, so I had a choice of deposting from my bank account directly to some German bank, or to sign up thru some European equivalent of PayPal, called FirstGate Click&Buy (linked from the individual.net site).

Anyway - as NewMan had claimed, so far they have been "an absolute rock", and they have phenominal message retention (my initial download went back to Feb. 5th, and I'm still accessing those messages), not that retention is that important with google archives, but maybe it's another good indicator.

Anyway - thanks NewMan - I don't care what Jerry Seinfeld says about you! :)

Hi Bill!

You are most welcome. :)

I'm so glad to hear it is working for you too! I have been using these guys since about 1999 back when it was free. Considering it was a free service, I was pleasantly surprized how well it has run. When they finally asked people to cough up the $10 Euros, I too said "no problem". Service is still there, and still rock solid.

I use Pipex UK, my ISP. They recently changed their servers and purportedly introduced some quantity limit (above which one can buy extra capacity), but I haven't seen me get anywhere near a limit, maybe because I just use plain text.

When I get into 'my account' I can't even see any quantity usage.

I seem to have very few problems; on rare occasions I can't see my own posts, that's (apparently) all.
