? about news servers (OT)

My cheap ass ISP uses Supernews as their newsgroup server........Supernews won't allow pix on any groups that aren't identified as being binaries in their name (such as alt.binaries.vwoalawyerssuckass) Something about name hierarchy.

I frequent another newsgroup that doesn't have the correct terminology in their name so I can't see any pix even though many post them and do see them. What I'm wondering is what other news servers you people use and how much a month they cost. Don't suggest that I change my ISP at they're only $5 a month! (dial up) TIA

its a very good policy :) I run a big local newsserver and get bitched frequently for that policy... but it allows me to keep it running better than all others in this area...

there are some free newsservers, just search for them in google...

Hi Ben, thanks for the link. According to their FAQ users cannot upload binaries, can you at least view them?

Is it possible to still post with whatever name or addy as you specify within your newsreader? Thanks

That's how it SHOULD be. Sadly not many servers have that filter.

I use one that doesn't carry any binary groups, so no help from me, sorry.

good. :P

I personally won't decode any binaries that come along, not only are they usually not worth the hassle I just plain out don't trust most of usenet. Same deal for my email too, actually.

I think the accepted practice these days is put the images on a web site and post the url to the group.

If you're lucky you can find a good server with your newsgroup there.

When Isigned up I went for the 20 gig plan. That was $65, one time fee. Mymembership ends when I reach 20 gigs. That was almost 3 years ago, I was ona DSL connection then, been on dialup for about a year now.Their membership plans have changed since then.... Von Erik

Do they allow posting of pix? Their site makes no mention of that. How much is 50MB (a day) in the real world?

50 high res pics a day, 1000s of small ones, 10 mp3's, or a couple of movie files... ;-)
