Micra Engine Replacement

OK, I know it's not a classic but I used to get a lot of helpful answers when I had the P6 so I thought I'd try here first. It's a 1990 Micra with 107K on the clock and 12 months MOT. The timing belt threw it's hand in and I'm quoted £400 to fix it. Obviously that's a non starter as the car's not worth it. "Experts" in the pub suggested a replacement engine. I can get one for £150 with a 3 month warranty.Would it be worth buying it and paying someone to swap them over or should I scrap it and start again? TIA Ian

chuck it, unless you really like it and have spent a lot on it and intend to keep it

You might get more stripping it for spares? I'd have a look on ebay and see what prices people get for bits of micra.

You will pick up a much newer Micra with less miles at auction for those kind of bucks -- be aware some Micra develop an idle speed regulation problem art high milages that demands a new throttle body --- expensive at circa 400 pounds new 200 exchang.e

That's what I was about to suggest - my Merc 230 has brought in £400 for parts and the shell should make another £30-40 when weighed in. Of course the last bit is only viable if you have a trailer (or use of one) to take it to the local metal merchants (NOT breakers). Must of course have all fluids drained and they won't take the tyres.

At £150 to resurrect your car is quite cheap, although to keep the cost down you would have to fit it yourself. Labour charges would double this then it would be borderline if it is worth it.

A secondhand head is another option. It would run at about £50 or less. Add to this a headgasket set then it would definitely worth it even if you have to pay someone £50 to fit it.
