Towing

Legally the car should be MOT'd and taxed if all the wheels are on the road. A dolly or trailer is OK providing it conforms to braking requirements. The weight may also need to be considered, relative to the towing vehicle. Mike.

Peter, You can A-frame the P4 Ok. Mind that it is heavy and remember to unlock the steering lock.

Reason 1. It's over 750kg and no way of linking the brakes to the tow car.

Reason 2. It's got no MOT or tax. That means you can't legally tow it with any of it's wheels on the ground.

To be on the safe side - Trailer it.

Last thing you need is for a tyre to let go or a wheel bearing or the box to seize while it's being towed.

Adrian's quite right, but then again I would say that, wouldn't I? (see sig). The only problem with trailering is that there aren't that many cars that are legal to tow the weight of a P4 plus trailer, so simply hiring a trailer may not be on.

Whereabouts are you, OP? Wouldn't cost much if I could fit it in with another job, but it would be a dear do for me to drive to Cornwall specially.

All the more reason not to A-frame it, really. 1500kg hanging off the back bumper using the tow car's brakes is going to get a little bit too "pushy" in the event of needing to stop sharply for my taste.

Thanks for all the replies. As I said in the original post, I raised the query following what I thought were non MOT'd non taxed cars being towed on the road last week.

With regard to potential tow cars, (apart from the P4 there are two cars in the family), LR Discovery (2 tonne+), Mk1 Trooper (2.5 tonne+) The "annoyance" is that fact that the cheapest trailer hire (for a day) is around £50 and I only need to move the car about 2 miles.

I'll have to see if I can borrow a trailer from somebody local to me in Trowbridge.

Given the towcars easily available to you, and the distance... Personally? I think I'd be hooking it on the back of the Disco.

Probably not much use to you, but a place in Bexley does trailer hire for £30 a day, which I thought was reasonable?

Another one in Maidstone charges £38.
