A number of Ford cars have had their coil springs fracture. The end of the spring would then pierce the tire resulting in a blowout. See the post at the Ford Taurus club below

Replaced both rear springs on my '99 Escort recently (60K) to the tune of almost $300...bottom loop was broken on both of them (and they were both slowly shifting out of the bottom retainer on the strut assembly)
