UK Ford Escort Lock problem WORSENED...

Okay the plot thickens...

I've now been having problems with 3 of the 4 locks on my 94 Escort. I've had a new key cut from the Master key to no avail.

The 3 'dodgy' locks are quite intermittent, the drivers door lock being the most persistenly problematic. I can lock all doors okay. I can unlock the boot lock and the ignition lock intermittently, the drivers door lock I can hardly ever open at all. The red 'master key' unlocks all locks okay.

Seemingly the locks are worn enough to be picky with anything but a perfect key. I went to my local Ford dealership and basically said whats the best option...obviously thinking on fitting them myself

i=2Ee. Have a full set of locks or have the ignition, drivers door and boot locks made up to fit my current key.

The full set which requires Key programming, therefore a custom new master key made up weighed in at =A3320, whereas three locks made up to my current key at around =A3270 - This is extortion.

The three locks on their own were a mere =A375, quite reasonable I think, but THREE hours labour to make the locks to my key whacked the cost right up!

I was wondering what is the best course of action for me to take, I've read in vagueness that it's not particularly hard to make the locks up yourself. This being the case, could I go and buy JUST 3 new locks, and then 'modify' them to my key?

Any instructions/information on this being done?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the new locks come as kits which you build up to the key, its a case of fitting the tumblers to the lock in the right order, our stores lads charge an extra fiver to build it up to your key then its just three door trims off...

WOW, thats a stunning difference compared to an HOURS labour charge per lock a la Ford dealer!

What store are you speaking of?

Thanks for the tip. :o)

Do you know if there is just one standard ignition lock? As mine needs to work with a chipped key to start the engine, it appears to be a very grey area. There's a shop on ebay selling all kinds of lock/barrel sets, but all seem to be writing off any compatibility with chipped keys.

Cheers.
