1996 Ranger oil pan gasket replacement

The gasket needs replacement. Coming out near the front crankshaft pulley. Leaking lots of oil. The local repair shop says the engine must be lifted to replace the gasket and they estimate around $1,000.

4wd, automatic.

Does this make sense?

More likely a front main seal. The balancer has to be pulled to check the sealing surface for wear, and if so it can be fixed with a speedy sleeve and another front seal. If that's what it is, the cost should be less than half.

If you can push the gasket in, then I have to ask the stupid question...

Is the oil pan bolts all tight (down to specs, not over tightened).

the front axle is in the way of dropping the pan down enough to get it and the gasket out for replacement. it's a royal pain in the ass to put it lightly. but yeah, if you can poke the gasket back in, tighten the bolts!
