2000 F250 SD Diesel

Here's what I've got.

Coming home from work this evening, the engine died., and I could not get it restarted. After about 5 minutes, it started right up; went another mile and it sputtered a few times and died again. I called a tow truck. By the time it got there, the truck started again, and I made it about four miles before it died once again. I had it towed home.

Anybody got any thoughts? I'm thinking fuel filter, but it's been raining here (Florida panhandle), so I'm wondering if anyone has had any electrical problems like I've described. The truck has run perfectly up until now; it ran fine going to work this morning. Also, I'm hearing something about the fuel injector pump or something like that, which I hear is very expensive to repair. Can I rule out the injector pump theory since it does startup and run for awhile before sputtering out again? It's got 79K on it.

Thanks in advance.

When you cranked the engine and it did not start, was the tach moving? If the tach doesn't move when cranking, the problem is the cam position sensor (CMP). The CMP signal tells the computer where the engine rotation is. The computer drives the tach and fires the injectors based on the CMP signal.

The part is covered under the engine's 5 year, 100,000 mile warranty. If your warranty is expired, buy the replacement part from International for half of what Ford charges.

This problem is described numerous times in the archives of the Powerstroke group hosted on Yahoo

I had similar problems with my 2001 Diesel truck last year. It turned out that I had filled up with a marginally bad fuel with enough water in it to cause these symptoms. After draining the tank and changing the filter/separator it was OK.

BTW, I did get reimbursed by the gas station (BP) for fuel and labor after threatening to report this incident to the Better Business Bureau and take the matter to the Small Claims Court.
