2000 Ranger - no low range 4x4

I have a 2000 Ranger 4x4 5-speed stick that will no longer engage low-range

4wd. I have owned the truck since new.

4x4 high range works fine, but when switched to low, there is no clicking, and no light on the dash. I have tried with the trans in gear, out of gear, brake depressed, parking brake on, parking brake off. No change.

Anything easy I can check?

If I switch from 4-hi to 4-low, I stay in 4-hi. If I go directly from 2wd to

4-low, I stay in 2wd. It's as if that position on the switch does nothing.

Parked. I've never tried to go to 4-low in motion. I suspect Bad Things might happen if the electronics even allowed it.

There is no sensation of lower gearing in 4-low (like 2-low with no front axle), so I suspect that the transfer case is not shifting, along with the hubs.

It's a manual trans, so I have tried neutral, foot on brake, parking brake on, clutch in with parking brake on, basically every such combo I can think of. I even switched it into 4-low while in neutral, then drove a few feet forward and back. I used to have to back up sometimes to get _out_ of 4-low.
