98 Ranger Blower Motor Resistor pack

Ah, yes, the famous thermal limiter blowout with the permanent failure. It usually fails if the blower is stuck and excessive current flows through the resistor assembly, overheating the resistors. That overheating can cause a fire. Unfortunately, Ford didn't put in a self-resetting cutout.

It is usually in the plenum next to the blower motor, toward the blending door. Just remove the screws, the connector, and pull it out. Use an ohmmeter to measure the little silverish thing in between the nichrome resistors. It will probably be open.

I understand it will cost around $40 for a replacement. Much, much more if Ford installs it. I soldered a wire across mine, but I constantly monitor the blower to make sure it still operates. Mine failed when water got into the blower assembly and froze.

Blower had problems on my 98 ranger, the resistor multi pin was very corroded. Access was easy from the passenger side of the firewall under the hood, the harness side connector and the resistor block were completley destroyed by the time I got them seperated. Made a good diagram and connected the harness back onto the new resitor block using individual crimp on lugs. No more problems.
