Rev counter

Can someone tell me what use a rev counter is in a car ?

I appreciate it can be useful if your a racing driver needing to get the gear changes right on the power peak, but to normal people driving around its an absolutely useless piece of information that fills the dashboard.

Much better to replace the rev counter with a clock !!!

Hahahahaha - you dork!

You just want to start an argument.

Use it to check your tuning points. Use it to tell yourself when you have over-revv'ed the engine and will have to rebuild it in the near future.

Normal people don't drive old Jaguars anyway.

Happy Trails To You

Whilst a rev counter is not of primary importance in every day driving, it IS important when tuning and timing the motor as well as adjusting the shift patterns of the transmission. In my older Jags the rev counter is a warning system of impending problems should the RPMs start to rise or fall from the "regular" position at speed.

Besides -- It lets me know the engine is still running at stop lights when the radio is playing at full blast!!

My Alfa had the tach right in front of the wheel and the speedo in the ceter of the dash. I guess Italians really like to race!

Hmmm... perhaps you could put a nice tissue holder in its place? Or maybe it could be used to haul Haggis home from the deli?

Cheers, Blake

I bet if there wasn't one you'd want one. Always moaning about Jags. why dont you get a Merk!!!!!

Some replies :-

Happy - I would not consider a dashboard rev counter to be accurate enough for tuning. When the engine screams its overrevving and I am definitely not normal - Hence the old Jag.

Blake - Two excellent ideas, a tissue holder or a haggis - Although I'm a little South of the migration routes of the Haggis. It has been known for the odd one or two to nest in a local woods.

George - Yes, I do always moan - A trick I learnt from my wife

Best wishes

Ok Stu,

Is the tachometer broke? (LOL) And how much did you end paying for a diff from the breakers?

Cheers, Blake

I got a great bargain. I bought a complete rear diff and suspension, front hubs and suspension arms and 4 great pepperpots for £36 off ebay. Only disadvantage was a 6 hr drive there and back to collect but it was well worth it. Now I've just got to reassemble and get it back on the car.

Stu

Stuart,

That is a stunning bargain! Well worth the drive. And who knows, perhaps you might see something pleasant along the way there.
