V12 XJS tyres

Just been to my local Tyre merchant and he had a devil of a time tracking down 235 / 60 / 15 tyres. He was told only Pirelli make them, although my unused spare is a Goodyear, and most places had them on back order as long as 8 months!!.

He did however find 6 and they are 150mph rated price £102.00 each. I have ordered them and they will be fitted. Is this a good price, it seemed okay to me. He could give me 130mph speed rated ones for £54.00 but I don't like to skimp especially as it is a powerful car.

Mine cost about $65 each for V-rated tires. But that was last year.

I've often wondered why VR tyres are worth the expense when leading brand HR (130mph) tyres are available for a more reasonable price. Who drives much faster than 70-80mph in the UK these days? Isn't a 130mph tyre more than ample, regardless of engine capacity? What other advantage do VR tyres bring, notwithstanding being the original fitment?

Hi,

I went with the 150 VR rating as I was trying to be aware of the great weight the front end of the XJS has, there must be huge stress and heat on the tyre walls during cornering. I enjoy driving and on the continent took to car up to its max with the hood down, spare pedal travel but it refused to exceed 143mph. I don't really intend to do that again but won't compromise my driving and thoughts of safety in any event that should occur.
