The dana 44 in the rear of my CJ has one piece, 30 spline axle shafts. I pulled one and checked. It *might* have been swapped in, but I doubt it since the rest of the vehicle has been left pretty much stock. I do know that it says Kaiser on it but it isn't stored locally so I can't easily check details. If it were really important I could probably get in touch with at least one of the previous owners who had it years ago. The guy I bought it from never did much with it and probably knew less about it than I did.

The best thing about it (other than the rear axle) is that the frame hasn't been butchered, so it is a good project rig. It may be possible to repair the body but it will be a lot of work.

Nope. Mine has the model 18 transfer case with the offset rear output, so my dana44 with the 30 spline, one piece axles is also offset. My understanding is that they used this axle for about a year and a half starting in mid 1970 and ending with the introduction of the centered rear output model 20 transfer case in 1972. The 30 spline, offset pumpkin axle is a popular upgrade for earlier Jeeps if you can find one. I paid $200 for mine and got the rest of the Jeep thrown in for free.

One thing which I have always been curious about, and have never gotten a definitive answer about, is whether the later 30 spline differential and one piece axle shafts can be swapped in place of the diff and axle shafts in the earlier housings. That would open up a lot of possibilities for differential upgrades. IIRC from my research, about all that is available for the 19 spline axles is the detroit locker and the trash-lock. As for the shafts, most of the guys running those axles are using a WARN full floater kit. If it is possible to swap a 30 spline differential into the older housing there would be a lot more upgrade options for the older housings.

In my case it is pretty much idle curiosity- all of the later 30 spline diffs will fit in my offset pumpkin 44 housing since it is the somewhat rare 30 spline version to begin with. I haven't looked into aftermarket shafts since I will probably re-use the stockers, but I know that WARN lists their full floater kit for the offset pumpkin with 30 spline axles.

I'm a lot more concerned about the dana 27 front axle and what to replace it with. A model 30 from a later narrow track CJ is the easiest option but if there is a 44 that can be swapped in without undue hassle and/or expense I'd be open to that too. 8^)

Bill, Actually, I don't know what it is. That's why I was asking the question originally.
