Gas... Stick it to 'em

That's not the price of gas, it's the price of socialism. Check out the taxes.

Yeah, but most of that stuff we could do without. Well, most of the drinks anyways. If you're not buying fancy bottled stuff, drinking water is cheap. But, when it comes to gas, without it in the tank you don't go very far.

It's not really the price of gas that's so bad. (well, it is, but...) What's really bad is the way it goes up and down so stinking much. Every time something hiccups at a refinery gas goes up. And seldom is it just a few cents.

Not buying gas for a few days is not the answer. But there must be a way to rein in these companies somehow...

The only good idea I have heard is to boycott a particular chain of stations....Exxon seems to be the most popular pick, from the emails I have gotten...

Again, flawed because you only hurt the job of americans working there. Nobody understands that the corparate big wigs will NEVER, no mater what you do, loose a penny of their paycheck. They will only lay off someone (possibly you!) to make that penny back. Nick

You're right Bill....but I also think there's gouging involved....or at least some hefty markup to say....pay for a particular war! The guy is in the land of black oil and IS controlling the flow from there.

Eron lied about their business deals or lack-there-of....if I had a refinery...I'd tell everyone that I have to limit output because the lightbulb in my office prevents me from working when it gets dark....so I'll have to charge more for my precious product! :S

nuts!!

Well I just got back from Ireland and the price of diesel was E.84 per liter and the unleaded was E.92 per liter and super is E 1.29per liter. !!!!! And then the exchange rate is $1.20 for 1.00 Euro. OUCH!!! Well at least I got great mileage.

Anything we can do is flawed Nick, I know that as well as you. There will always be casualties, that cannot be helped. The biggest problem with that, is that Exxon is owned by BP, so all BP and Amoco, and whoever else they own, all those stations would have to be boycotted as well. Anyway, if I remember correctly they (Exxon) are owned by BP. That's not the point. When the execs of a copmany become the only employees, they generally figure it out...they just aren't that intelligent.

Considering fuel costs overseas, particularly in Europe where most of the cost is taxes, we've got it easy. Highest fuel costs ever relative to inflation were in '81 at the end of the Carter administration. In today's dollars gas cost around $2.90+ per gallon. I worked for VW at the time and everyone was banking on $50 /barrel oil in '81 dollars. Turned out oil prices collapsed, and any of the chicken littles foolish enough to invest in oil futures, VW franchises, etc. took a bath. I'll get concerned when there are lines at the gas station. Ain't seen one recently, but sure did back in '74 & '79. Relax, we've been here before and the sun still comes up every day.

I don't think it would be a good idea to do either for me. I live 20 miles from work and 95% of that distance is via a highway with 65 mph speed limit, no bicycles allowed.

My question is, what would the price of gas have to be before alternative (renewable) fuels became viable in the market? Obviously, the high taxes in UK aren't enough to get alternative fuel going (unless there are other factors over there, wacky Brits). I'd love to burn alcohol, or switch to pure electric vehicle (need more nuke plants on the grid), but gas is just so darn cheap in comparison.

Remember, if you think gas is expensive in North America now, just wait 'til Mexico & Venezuela run out.
