how steep is to steep?

We have some of those out by the lake. My problem was when the front wheel dropped into a wash and gave me a slot-car style ride to the bottom. That and the ABS kicking in. That fuse got pulled quickly. After extracting the seat cover the second try was much smoother. I still don't like going down washed out trails.

Had a similar situation to that when the ZJ was new. A Toyota pickup spinning wheels, throwing dirt then backed up to let the "Yuppie SUV" give it a try. "Ha Ha.. Go ahead, you can't make it." so I crawled up it in low. Only spot that almost got me was the top breakover. Turned around, went back down. Stopped and told him "That was FUN!, any more hills around here?" His girlfriend was laughing her ass off. Never got an answer. ^_^ Still gives me chuckles.

That's an interesting question... Pictures never do obstacles justice, and I'm sure this is no exception. I've done some hills in my Jeep that were pretty freaky the first time, but repeats of the same hill are not scary at all... So far there is only one hill I haven't had the guts to try a second time. I was freaked out all the way up, probably saw 4+ ft of air under the front tires of the guy before me as he crested it, but darn it all if my lil TJ didn't crawl right up it... I've come to realize that until my confort factor rises, my Jeep will do far more scary things than I am willing to try.

I guess it's a matter of how long you've been in the hobby... How comfortable you are with what can and can't be done. You were probably looking for a measurement though, huh? n.

I got up some fairly steep ones with no lockers, albeit with a bit of a run... I would try it, and take pictures of it happening.

Worst case scenario, someone stole it and rolled it!

theres no way really to get an accurate side shot on that particular slope. :-(

im not to concerned about coming down it since i could just hit the gas if it started to go over (only like 60 feet to the bottom). going up it is where the challenge is at. i could hit it with speed and let momentum carry me to the top but that proves nothing.

heh.....one of those times when you gotta love a jeep.

agreed. fwiw there were several ATVs that wiped out trying to come down it (polaris engine braking is rear wheel only) and nobody was willing to attempt to climb it without momentum. with the cage on the rhino though i wasnt scared at all even if it rolled and i figured it would be a great way to test its limitations. although the respect points from the ATVers was nice thats not why i ride. i _think_ my rubicon can climb it but.....

thats just it. i could hit it hard enough in a rav 4 to top the hill. i want to crawl the hill. :-)

I suggest you hold a beer in one hand and yell out "WATCH THIS!" you might just make it then. Nick

bwak, bwak, bwak... I double dare ya! But seriously, you have a few things on your side.. 4:1, lockers, auto, stock height. It should be a breeze. That hill is short enough that you'd be hard pressed to get into too much trouble... pick your line and stick to it... if things get ugly slam it in reverse and back down. Don't try to change your line half way... that's when the trouble starts. If you really want to raise some eyebrows, back up the hill... avoid any wheel hop or you'll break something... if you have to bail out, slam it in

I vote you have someone present with a video camera and try it. You know, sometimes we get bored on these newsgroups and forums, and need a good laugh; a brand new Rubi rolling would probably do it!! LOL JK, don't try something you're not comfortable with, or can't afford if it goes wrong.

The obvious line is hte one on the left, but it appears to have a verticle section at the top that can induce a roll over the back of your TJ. I think the line I would be looking at is the one to the right where there are some ruts that can prove problematic, but the verticle issues at the top do not appear to be evident.

You need a magnetic angle finder that you can keep stuck to the dashboard. Wait, you haven't got a Real Jeep with a metal dashboard. ;-)

the lockers are part of what concerns me. although i probably couldnt crawl it without it, with the lockers it will keep climbing beyond the point of rollover.

Try the line at the right first, then come down the line on the left. If you think the back is coming over the top, smash the gas so the front outruns the back, and the tires remain on the bottom. Once you do this a couple of times, you should have a line that you can go up.
