Jeep Realiability

Actually, it's based upon the European Mondeo (Contour over here) and hasn't been well received by either the Jaguar faithful, the press or the public. It's another one of ex Ford CEO Jac Nasser's decisions that were forced on everyone. Those with any knowledge of the business knew it would fail. It'll take them ten years to undo the damage done to the brand.

I see a fairly good number of the X types around here. Oddly enough, on a direct query to two different owners, neither knew it was a all wheel drive. Personally I think that says more about Jaguar than the merits, or lack thereof, of the car itself. Can't be a realy Jaguar engine, though, no big oil slicks anywhere under the parked ones, no radiators puking fluid on hot days....

No, the days of Jaguars shorting out & puking fluids are long gone. Unfortunately Ford threw the baby out with the bath water where the S & X-types are concerned. Both are simply Ford platforms with revised suspension tuning and tarted up styling, sort of "Faux-Jaguars" as we have come to call 'em.

Fortunately for Jaguar long term, both cars have been marketplace flops because the target customers either know the difference beforehand, or find out the scam from the press. Replacements for both cars will most likely have their own, dedicated platforms. There's a big fight going on at high levels right now but the purists have won from what I'm told.

However, all that aside, the new XJ8 (big Jaguar Sedan) is a masterpiece, mostly because the Ford bean-counters were kept far away from that design team. Former BMW Exec VP Wolfgang Reitzle became head of Fords Premier Automotive Group in early '99 and was the main man on the new Jaguar XJ. He fought off many attempts by the Ford finance hacks who wanted it to be based upon the S-Type platform to save money. Apparently Reitzle did his job so well they drove him out of the organization!

Glad to see that. I have no problem with Jaguar technology being used in the Lincoln LS, but other than wiring, reliability, etc. I would much rather let the Jaguar folks do the mechanicals designs thanking Bill Ford in advance, etc. etc. I guess the X-type isn't a bad little car, just kinda pricey and not really a competitor in the price range. I like the looks of the front end of the S-type, but having once lusted after a real '61 3.8S, well, it would kinda be like getting a blowup doll of Christina Ricci rather than the real thing.

Yah, if the stock market ever comes out of the toilet, the big Jag XJR is well ahead of any new Grand Cherokee on my wishlist. Lighter than the S type, can't recall if also lighter than the X-type. And stiffer.

My pal has an X type which I have been in quite a few times; it is heaps better than a Mondeo, and overall, not a bad car. On the other hand, it isn't my idea of a Jag. I don't think it will pull the brand down too much.

The S type, I gather, is competent, but it is sooo ugly and has an arse on it like a fat lady. [ cue Mr Serusa - all Jags are lovely, some more than others ;) ]. I'm not surprised people aren't buying it.

The XK8 is my favourite - the car that would have trashed its traditional rival Aston Martin, had it not been now owned by the same owners, and, em, looked fairly similar !

Ay the home 'o me Great, Great Grandpappy! Actually he was born in Dumfries, but he headed for Edinburgh as a lad, probably had buggered the Vicar's daughter or something and needed to get out of town fast! :-)

Have we declared our once and for all independence from England yet?

A fine assessment of the current Jaguar state of affairs. I'm told they'll base all future Jaguars on dedicated platforms, as the Ford parts-bin leveraged S & X Types are now certified flops. Hey, we told em, but would they listen....???)

Maybe if he would have figured out the proper hole to tap, he would have gotten married to her. :) Buuuuugggggeration. Hmmmm. If you want to use these kind of terms, you should first find out what they mean. :-)

All depends on what orientation you wanna be eh? :)

Hah, sort of. We now have a Scottish parliament (good start), but it would appear we are incapable of governing ourselves (bad news). The parliament decided they need a nice new building to meet in (not that Edinburgh is exactly short of fine buildings), so they set about building one for 40 million quid. The total cost so far (and it isnt complete) is 400 million quid. A friend of a friend got the contract for covering 400 chairs with leather, which had to be an exotic foreign leather. Having completed the 400 chairs, he got the contract again to do the same chairs with a slightly different shade of exotic leather. Half way through, some "numpty" decided that they had forgotten to mention that the building should be bomb proof allegedly. As Scotland has only 5 million people, per head of population that would be equivalent of of 35 billion US on one building..

I was over in Scotland oh more than a few years back and the Parliment building was under construction back then! You mean they still haven't finished it? When I was there it was not even a framework.

I think my ancestral people are waiting for Mel Gibson to come back & lead 'em again.

I was in Glasgow back in '99 and ambled into a local pub. When the locals found out I was a Yank of Scottish descent I never bought another beer..er, ale, er lager. Funny, though, I couldn't understand a single word some of 'em said!

No, no, I was referring to Scotland. The Brits are bound to become the 51st State eventually, anyway, at which time we'll all become far more polite, genteel and .... f&^%ing broke from Socialist taxes...

Never did work out why England had a reputation for being polite/genteel. In Europe we have a reputation of being laager louts which is probably nearer the mark..
