Ok, Earle, we were there at 9 AM, stopped at the Sinclair where we always air down & buy coffee & snacks for the day. Took my neighbor Jim for his first trip around the Alpine Loop. Stopped at American Basin, then headed to Lake City,. but stopped at a GREAT little surprise of a place in Sherman called the A&A Guest Ranch for a fantastic Italian lunch (this place is a gem).

We were going to head up to Carson but it was SNOWING on the peaks. Rained like an SOB all the way from Lake City back over to Silverton, where we stopped at the Conoco to air back up & hose all the clay & muck off the YJ.

It rained some here too. Ever tried Poughkeepsie Gulch in the rain?

Hunter green huh? I must have seen twenty rigs like that this summer. Up here you can't swing a dead cat around without hitting one. The coolest looking Jeep I saw had half moon yellow smiley face hub caps.

I live right behind the place. Black house, white FJ40 with a red roof and Nine Inch Nails logo painted on top sitting next to it, grey (sort of) three quarter ton Suburban parked behind that. If you don't believe me ask the guys at the Conoca station who lives there. Why would I want to try out a Rubicon?

Does Chris still run the Miners Tavern? I know she and her husband ran it until he died of cancer a few years ago. Last time I saw her she was working at the visitor's center.

Actually Poughkeepsie is the only trail up there I've not done. Can't get a group from here to go up and do it, and our local club (Creeper Jeepers) sponsors Black Bear and Blanca Peak trail, so everyone's always tied up doing trail repair, etc. Anyway, heard it's kinda sloppy!

The only time I go to the Miner's Tavern is when there is an ambulance call and I have the bad luck to be on call. After thirty or so years of drinking I have finally come to the conclusion that alcohol and brains don't mix.

Last time I looked there were a half dozen of them at least, a couple of trophy homes for the rich folks and a row of "affordable housing" units for the poor folks. The one up the hill that looks like a chalet is reputed to have cost a million, but you know how rumors go in towns like this.

There is a lot of new construction up there, but most of it seems to blend in. That chalet-looking thing is unfortunate, sticks out like a diamond in a goat's @$$.

What's with all the paving, why not go back to dirt & horses & stuff?

County is taking over Greene Street from the state this year. As a result the state has to bring it up to "standards" before the transfer. In my opinion (and that of a lot of people in town) the state is doing the absolute minimum that can be called acceptable. We also got money from the same people who did our piece of s*it skating rink for side walks at the same time. If you look closely you will see that those fancy new side walks are only four inches thick. This is in a town with some rather extreme temperature fluctuations in winter and water lines nine feet deep to prevent freezing. After the first winter we might be back to dirt. :o(

Yeah, and they don't seem to be in much of a hurry to finish either. I noticed today they're even doing curb work in places. Why does Silverton need curbs?
