Roof rack opinions

I am looking to carry a twelve foot canoe with the soft top in place, maybe some occasional lumber or a rolled up carpet, and I am thinking of something like this:

"Bestop HighRock 4x4 Modular Hinged Roof Rack System

1976-06 TJ and YJ Wrangler, Rubicon, and CJ;Hinged Roof Rack; Up to three Universal Rack Trays (each sold separately) can be mounted to the Hinged Roof Rack;Attaches to the windshield hinges and rear frame; No drill installation; Constructed of black, powder-coated tubular steel"

Fuel prices, you know, forced sale of three quarter ton Suburban, heh.

Opinions?

Thanks.

I have a set of plans to make one just like that if you are interested. You would need a small welder though.

Yakima is looking into 4x4 accessories. I have a meeting with them tomorrow night. Of course that wont help you right now...

Thanks anyway. I have a Thule setup with rain gutter substitutes on my hard top, but of course that doesn't help the soft top situation. I am looking at the Olympic Sports Rack too but I don't know about drilling holes. The Bestop looks like it attaches to the rear bumper bolts instead. Either one looks like it could maybe handle my canoe, some skis or even a ladder.

I wouldn't be too confident having three or four people dancing on top during a rock concert in the rain, but I'm not nearly as young as I used to be. ;^)

OK, there were a few folks emailing me about the plans... that I lost in a harddrive failure..... Well I got an image of the sucker (the HD) and recovered 'most of' my data so I have sent the plans off to a couple folks.

I know there is a third request out there that came in just as the system was crashing so it got lost. If the person wants to email me again, I can send off the plans now.

Thanks for the offer, but life seems to be short on money in the first half, and short on time in the second. I think I'll buy the Bestop product.

The material list for this rack runs at $65.00 US..... But, you need a little welder to build it.

And time. I have the welder, and so many projects backed up...
