Winches

Who makes a good winch for a good price? Are the stock winches by Mopar any good? Can I do better?

Thanks,

Mopar Winches are made by Warn and are basically the XD series. They work fine.

Mopar's winches are made by Warn.. You'd be better off just buying a Warn winch as you'll find it is cheeper and is litterly the same thing.. I currently have an hs9500 on my TJ.. I haven't yet had the opertunity to use it on my jeep yet ... But I had the winch on my 3/4ton on 37's for three years and used it dozens of times and it was able to move it around with little problem.. I have no doubt it will more then do the job for me on a significantly smaller vehicle..

Neither does my electric, and it will work if I park the Jeepster on it's roof.

Ummm...how do you keep the engine in a Real Jeep (with a carburetor, of course) running to keep the PTO winch pulling while you winch the Real Jeep up a 30' vertical cliff?

I'd rather have a hydraulic than the pto one on my Landy...

Not if setup properly.. I had a vehicle almost completly submersed in water.. Your PTO on your "real" (bs) jeep wouldn't have done a thing for you.. Had it been your "real" (bs) jeep you'd have been looking forward to a three day walk in sub-zero temperatures.. With little effort that electric winch was able to pull the us out, and pull start the vehicle, luckly the engine was well sealed and the water was just shy of the snorkle so none got in..

All this "real" crap just makes you look somewhat like an ass you do realize...

But really....if the water level got to the height of the battery terminals...wouldn't that short it out? forget the water level in the cab getting in to those cheesy connectors that we put on our CB's and stuff..

Not to start a flame war or anything, but how often has your engine been dead and you had to save a bus lode of nuns from the raging rapids of the largest river known to man. All things being equal which one would you really want to own the one that will pull the whole bus lode of nuns up a 80' embankment at 90% and save all there lives, or try to pull them 30' have the electric go up in smoke and they are all left there dangling for there lives until some one with a hydraulic winch comes to the rescue and saves all of them. Lets get real I've sat here time and time again and heard all the horror stories about those sad and sorry people who have regretted buying a hydraulic winch and I just don't get it . It is just quite simply crap. You guys that make these claims just don't get it. If your engine is dead in the water so darn deep that it will kill your engine than I'd like to see you power swim up the fricking river and jump out hook up your golden winch and power swim back to your jeep if it's still there and winch your shocked as e's out of the river. And now I have to ask. DO you really think you can swim the English channel as well. Lets' get real when you ad up all the pluses and minuses of each one they all have there game. Some better then the others. I have seen them all work and now I own a Mile Marker Hydraulic for over four years now I have had to finish pulling people out of spots that the Electric winch couldn't do the job. And now your trying to say just how shi ty the hydraulic winch is and I'm ROTFLMAO. I wouldn't try and tell you how bad a set of Boggers are in a mud hole with out having owned a set so don't try and tell people how bad a hydraulic winch is when you've never owned one. Grow up and start Jeeping in the real world and stop talking internet crap.

Spoken like someone who's invested a lot of money in a hydraulic winch....Bill knows better, he uses the PTO and all the Nuns, well, they're waiting for him to get the Real Jeeps 4 banger started...

I have seen cars drive off the road and be completely submerged, in a canal or lake, and the headlights continue shining under water for quite some time - I don't think the water will carry that small amount of current enough to affect you immediately - that said, if the water gets that high, you are probably screwed anyway! One can very eaisly waterproof the battery by having it in a waterproof container.. with sealed lid and sealed passages for the wire..
