Wrangler Unlimited

I'm very interested in buying a new Jeep. My first Jeep. My first new car.

There seem to be many options this year. The Unlimited is perfect, I am looking to start a family in the next year or so, so the extra space would be exponentially important. But, my heart WAS set on a Rubicon becuase of its beefyness.

Is the Unlimited more comparable to a Sport or a Rubicon?

How much does the Unlimited go for?

The Special Edition Willys looks cool, but it seems not much more than a fancy paint job, though I like the idea of the windshield folding down!

Anyhow, I also am still considering buying a restored Cj or maybe even a Toyota fj40.

What I'm looking for is a reliable off road-road vehicle, that I can fit a couple of childseats in when necessary.

Thanks, Muuurgh

From what the local dealer here said (and from what I could tell by the stickers), the Limited seemed to be a fairly loaded Sport. Only comes with an automatic, which I know doesn't bother some. Wouldn't bother me either, but I know some do prefer a 5 speed.

The two our dealer had were going for $500 over invoice which ended up being about $24 - 25k depending on options. There is speculation that a Rubicon model of the Unlimited will be offered late this year. I was thinking of trading my '01 in on a Rubi or an Unlimited, but with the chance of a Rubi Unlimited, I decided to wait and see if one comes out for late '04 or '05.

As far as I know, the Willys edition is really just a paint/interior color scheme. I don't think there's anything else about it that's different from the other models... the windshields fold down on those as well.

Any speculation wrt the cost of an Unlimited Rubi? 30k? n.

I'd expect it to be $30k or just over, but I really don't have any "inside" info....

I looked at the first Unlimited to hit my local dealer lot this weekend. Did not have a chance to drive it as the dealership had just closed. It was fairly well equipped with some some chrome roll bumpers front and rear. Sticker was $25, 025. I saw a hard top on the web site, wonder how much that will add. It doesn't look bad, different for sure, but not bad. I already started picturing the upgrades...3-4 inch lift...32" tires...(I dont get too aggressive off road)...a nice roof rack ...room for the family to go camping. Yep, I may be looking to trade sooner than I planned.

I think the key issue is how much you intend to off road, and weighing that against your desire for a "family" vehicle. If you're not planning on doing a lot of off road driving, go for the unlimited.

I think a great compromise is to find a low mileage 99 or 00 XJ (Cherokee). It has a very good off road capabilities, availible aftermarket mods, and I think the key thing is, 4 doors. I would guarantee that flipping seats forward 3 or 4 times a day trying to pull out a child seat will soon become a PITA. I have seen many of my friends and family struggle with a 2 door vehicle and child seats. If my wife didn't have a WJ, I would consider trading in my 02 TJ Sport in for an XJ.

just my $0.02

That pretty much ruins it for me. The 4X4 is more important than the child transporter. We already have a vehicle for that, the Jeep would be for pleasure, but useful if needed for transportation.

I have to have a standard. Stink.

Do you remember if the Unlimited have Selectract or Command trac? I read about the Unlimited in the newspaper which said that the Unlimited was longer but did not say why. If the extra length is to give the Wrangler the Selectrac four wheel drive that would be really great.

Another alternative would be a 99 or 00 used Grand.
