2.5 n/a

should I find myself the owner (again) of a 2.5 n/a, what could I do to get some more life from it? If it were petrol I could fiddle with cams and heads etc, what about diesel?

Try throwing it off a cliff, that should improve it's terminal velocity and acceleration. Tee hee hee.

Seriously, I found myself in that position many years ago. I got hold of a turbo conversion kit, don't know who made the kit but it was a non-wastegated system with a Holset turbo unit. It reached 4.5psi boost at full throttle / max rpm!! No use at all, just made the lethargic disiesel lump drink more fuel! I experimented with different turbo's, eventually settling for a Garret T3 from an MG Metro of all things!! (See, there is a use for bits of old metro's). This transformed the engine completely, so for added refinement I fitted the injector pump from a 2.5 turbodisiesel, connected up the boost sensing line and set the turbo wastegate to give a boost of 6.5psi as i didn't want to melt the pistons! Full boost was available with just a gentle increase on the throttle pedal at anything from

1100rpm upwards, the only downfall being the engine's reluctance to perform over 3500rpm due to exhaust back pressure within the manifold. This was alleviated a little by gas-flowing the turbo housing, in particular the wastegate throat. The difference on the road was amazing, acceleration was vastly improved due to the torque increase at lower rpm's and it could hold a steady speed on hills, something never previously experienced in a disiesel landy! I eventually got fed up/bored/used to the engine in this format, ripped it out and fitted a V8, never looked back since.

P.S. Turbo'd unit was later fitted to an old SIII swb, that was fun, with

7.50's and rangie diffs. Thing would cruise on the motorway at 80mph all day if you'd wanted to.
