200Tdi into 1984 110 to replace 2.25 diesel

Hello all,

Done some searching on this, but can't find an answer. How easy is it to replace a 2.25 diesel engine with a 200 (or 300) Tdi - assuming I can find a suitable motor? Ta.

Putting a 200Tdi is pretty straight forward *if* you get all the bits with it - air filter housing, hoses, intercooler/radiator, power steering reservoir etc etc - you just literally swap it over (you can ignore the glow plug timer etc as 200's don't really need them). If you are going down the complete donor vehicle route then things are quite simple, though if the donor is a 90 you'd best keep your current transfer box as it is higher ratio.

If you're doing it starting with just an engine then it can get difficult as you'll need to move things around, and find places to put the intercooler etc and hoses won't match exactly.

OK, that seems fairly clear. Am I right in supposing that the bellhousing, engine mounts etc. are the same? I am quite keen to keep the chassis and body of this SW, since they are in top-notch condition (even the door bottoms are solid!).

Anyone got a Tdi they are looking to sell?

I have a 200TDi from a Disco in my formerly Turbo 110. It was done by a specialist, and involved a lot of work, including moving engine mountings and reshaping the passenger foot-well. They also had to reshape the exhaust downpipe from the Disco, and if I'd not had a snorkel already they'd have had to drastically alter the air inlet. I think the front crossmember is the same as before, as it's the same gearbox and bellhousing.

It was well & quickly done (IMHO), and runs very nicely, but it wasn't cheap. I understand if you have a Defender 200 TDi to start with, it's much easier, but they're like hens teeth for this sort of project and go for a big premium, so it's a trade-off really.

IIRC, it should also have a different ratio in the transfer box, to improve the top speed (seems to run out of gears around 65), but for my purposes, I'm happy with nippy-ness at lower speeds, so it's not a real issue. The speedometer presently reads true (-ish), but I'm not sure if it would were I to change the Xfer box.

The only real downside I can see is that changing the starter (which I'll have to do eventually) will be a pig, as it's blocked in by the manifolds above and the downpipe below.

Just my twopence. Someone who really knows will be along in a minute, I'm sure.

Simonm.

200 TDi will fit existing engine mount positions, I'm trying to find out if disco brackets will fit or if I need defender ones. Early 300TDi without all the electronic gubbins fit but you have to weld in new engine mounts. Later 300TDi require more tinkering.
