Air flow Indicator Fault

Hi All

I have a 99 Disco Series II TD5 Auto

I am achieving very poor fuel economy by any standard, but I have just driven from one side of Australia to the other ( ie all country driving ) and have struggled to get more that 6-7 km to the litre ( I am a metric only man ).

I beleive that I should be achieving approx 10 Km to the litre. Its been an expendive trip considering I have done 6000 KM's

I had a mechanic put the book ontot the vehicle and it registered an "AIR FLOW INDIECATOR FAULT" which he cleared. I also replace the air filter as well.

The mechanic metioned that this fault may have pu the vehicle into a survival "get home mode" and therefore used more fuel.

Does that sound correct??. What problems/symptoms would and air flow indicator faul have/cause and what would cause an air flow indicator fault??
