Defender 90 handbrake

Hiya all,

Just got a '93 Defender 90 and went for my first play off road today, nothing too serious just to get me back into things. After the jetwash the car wouldn't move, then there was a bit of a bang and off we went. I think it was the handbrake stuck on. Have I got mud or something in it or is it stuffed??

Thanks in advance for any help here.

If the handbrake still works then it's probably OK, and if the truck pulls straight under braking then that's encouraging, however there might be a stuck brake disc somewhere rather than/as well as a sticky handbrake so check the brakes in the rain, on my truck it used to pull to one side when wet due to sticking brakes.

I had the same experience some years ago with same vehicle - but nothing to do with offroading. In my case it was the handbrake sticking on - particularly after been left standing with handbrake on. In my case it was caused by oil weeping from the transfer box onto the drum.Your case may or may not be the same.It could be mud/water having the same effect. You will have to take the handbrake drum off to find out. Meantime you may find reversing may unstick it more easily than going forward.
