Defender 90 Tyres

It should have 205 x 16 radials but I suppose the tyres that are on could be legal so long as the crossply pair (and they have to be paired on each axle) are fitted on the front and the radials on the back. I doubt it though as the vehicle was AFAIK designed to run on all radials.

I run my 110 on 750x16 radials (makes no sense you might say), but Avon produce Rangemaster radials marked as this size. They are excellent tyres and were standard fitment at some time. I think the sidewall marking is 750R16 but can't be bothered to walk outside to look. I used to have another 110 on 750x16 Deestone cross-plies, deep directional tread, but they wore quickly, howled a lot, and were awful slippy on wet roads.

AFAIK the 110s have wider wheels than 90s, so people fit 110 wheels and tyres if they want a wider tyre. So you may have to change wheels as well as tyres if you want to go back to original sizes.

Whether legal or not I wouldn't run different tyres front and back, you would have to carry two spares ! This is also a problem with directional tread mud tyres, you really need two spares. I would say get rid of cross-plies if that is what they are, as they are simply awful tyres. If they are Avon 750x16 radials someone like me might buy them off you.

Here is a link that shows the Rangemaster radial tyre, and another version the Rangemaster CR34 which looks a bit short of tread to me (designed for Chelsea tractors I suppose).

Standard steel wheel size is the same for 90 and 110 at 5.5x16, and all standard alloys are 7x16, by the way all new Defender vehicles fitted with steel wheel rims are now tubeless.

They state "Original size tyres on 90/110 and Defender are 7.50 x 16 and 205R16, with 235/85 R 16 or 265/75 R 16 being fitted to vehicles with alloy wheels."

Landrover no longer offer the 265/75x16 tyre for Defenders both 90 and 110.

Wasn't it the other way round originally 7.50x16 on the 110 and 205R16 on the 90s??

Yes! and I think before that, the very early 90 had 6.00 x 16 Avon Traction Mileage which was a cross ply - I think!

Folk also now seem to fit 225/75R16 in place of 205/80R16, the rolling radius being almost identical. Any comments?

series IIIs had 6.00x16 and 7.50x16 respectively on SWB and LWB, on different rims. Right near the end of SIIIs they said that you could optionally fit 205R16 as per range rover. The crossplies were indeed Avon traction mileage.

Standard tyres on 110s were 7.50x16 and later 7.50R16 for a long time, but at some point they changed to 235/85R16. Very early 90s were I think available with 600x16 but soon changed to 205R16 as standard, this persisted for some time but now they get 235/85R16 same as the 110s.
