Disco 2 TD5 - Head Gasket going?

Having to top up coolant on the D2 more than usual at present, also had a bit of the orange OAT coolant spilling out of the vent pipe in the header tank although only tiny amounts. Today noticed coolant leaking slightly from the bleed screw in the top hose to the rad.

So, to me all these symptoms are pointing to a possible head gasket on the way out. It's a 99 model so will no doubt have the plastic dowels between block and head.

is there a sure fire way to tell if it is a HG problem without actually removing the head??

Any oil in the water?

You can get a strip that tests the coolant for combustion stuff.

Nip down to Old Mill, Kev has a LOT of experience with TD5's, also get him to check out the autobox..

Or water in the oil. Take a peek at the underside of the oil filler cap there shouldn't be any appreciable amount of emulsion there.

Sounds like you have a number of minor leaks that are adding up to a noticeable loss. Sort them out and see what happens. Check the seating/condition of the coolant filler cap seal.

Be careful with that bleed screw on the top hose. It's a fragile bit of plastic that has a neck just under the flat top that is *very* easy to just twist off. Do not be tempted to use the screw driver slot for tightening, the points and fingers are enough.

BTDTGTTS twice, though the second time was after it had been serviced at the stealers and they had broke it. I did drive around for quite a while with it securly taped on with self-amalgamting tape. Might have put a little squer of it under the top then several good even layers over the whole thing.
