Discovery alarm - where is it.

I have a 1998 R reg disco, with the factory fitted 2 button alarm system. My insurance company wants to know the make/model/serial number. Does anyone know where the actual unit is located in the vehicle so that I check this info. I am getting lots of grief from my insurance company because apparently that system was not thatcham class 2 certified, and they want me to have some crappy aftermarket system fitted, which I dont want to do!! Has anyone had any experiance with this?

Thanks Rob

If you have the drivers handbook that came with the car, you'll probably find the info in that.

It might have something to do with the fact that the system fitted by Land Rover when the car was built, is in fact considered to be the "crappy" system.

Actually the system fitted was very good, but because of the way it worked it could not gain Thatcham approval - later vehicles have a worse system fitted to keep insurerers happy. Thatcham "knows best" - Not.

My 1998 Discovery had a Thatcham Category 1 system factory fitted, according to the handbook! This should satisfy your insurance company, and if it doesn't, move insurance companies!

Fitting a different alarm system will be very complicated.

Well, as far as I can tell, that was only fitted to the 98 S reg disco's. Unfortunatly, I dont have any documentation for the system, and landrover customer service insists that the 98 Disco does not have a Thatcham approved system. Well, anyway, thanks for the info. I dont really know where to go from here. I will try another insurance company, problem is, I only have 4 years no claims, so without the alarm system, they want £1200-00 per anum for insurance! £800-00 with one, but I dont want someone cutting into my looms and messing with my wireing.

Hi Robert,

Just change the insurance company

If they were up to speed, They would know the alarm system on the vehicle, that you told them.

Dont know who you are trying, but try either NFU, Or Esure !!, both did not even ask if I had one !!

Steve.

Try Land Rover's own insurance company first, then try NFU. The price will, obviously, depend on where you live, to a huge variation!

Robert, try Norwich Union Direct. VERY helpful and don't care about my Warwick Banks handling kit, Rimmer full SS exchaust system and home-fit cruise control. I have an '88 RR Vogue SE Auto EFi and pay £270-ish fully comp in Sevenoaks, Kent. Admitedly I have 60% NCD and am married (instant £100 reduction!).

Actually that's who we are with too. The Discovery was £200 the first year and Bruce was even more pleased when it was £157 for the past year.
