Discovery V8 (3.9) LPG conversion...info needed..

Hi all,

I've been looking at a 96' 3.9 V8 LPG Discovery with single point injection to replace my 95 300tdi ES. As I know nothing about the different type's of LPG conversion, could someone here on the group inform me of the difference's between multi point/single point and any first hand experience of said vehicle with LPG..

Performance difference? MPG ? Should it idle nice and evenly on either...this one a 'lumpy' on Petrol.

Thanks in advance.

Mine was lumpy on petrol compared to LPG but my Jag is the same!!

just seems to run smoother on LPG!!

Single point = cheaper conversion and less to go wrong ( Injectors)

Multipoint more expensive to fit more to go wrong but better MPG

MPG will be down about 5 - 10 % on multipoint bout 15 -20 % on singlepoint

Someone will be along in a bit to disprove in a mo no doubt :-) There are peeps on here that REALLY know the LPG game :-) If you can live with the short range with underslung tanks (bout 130 - 150 miles) then the V8 is really the way to go - I'm missing mine already!! only gone since a month !!

yeah, me too. Martyn, you don't want to give it back do you?

Doesn't have to be lumpy on petrol, but it's always a compromise (you can't have the timing perfect for each). Unless you buy a clever ignition amp with different timing for the two fuels, which was going to be my next move...

If you are using the vehicle a lot, don't underestimate how much of a pita it is to refuel almost every day, or twice some days (it takes longer than filling with petrol too).

Wow - only 130 - 150 miles... That's not much at all. What size LPG tank was that? The one I looked at had four tanks - 2 under the rear floor and 1 either side of the side steps. My guess is they were 20 litres each, given 80 in total - does that sound possible?

My commute is 100 miles a day (3 days a week) so that filling up nearly every day would be a real pain, and mainly motorway as well. In fact I've noted I only pass one LPG station on the journey...42p a litre as well... :-/

Looks like a TD5 ES with a visit to Allisport of JJ Fearn could be the answer.

cheers.

Twin 35 L under the sills - gave a fill of around 50 - 55L Main reason for getting rid was the filling up - closest LPG for us is 8 miles away and most of the time not in the right direction!!

I sold my 300Tdi for the V8 as I needed more power but sold the V8 because of range, now got a year 2000 Volvo V70 for the "family" cart and I've just bought the Jag to get to and from work - 60 odd miles a day but giving around 44Mpg equivalent(LPG) so like running a Fiesta!! but a bit more comfortable.

I have found myself eyeing up some TD5's lately !!! They now seem a good idea, especially as the alpine roofs and back doors don't seem to rot - the curse of the 300 style !!! and you can get a decent one for around the 10 grand mark.

It just don't seem right not having a Landy on the drive :-(

a friend of mine with a mid 90s v8 disco recently converted it to run on LPG only. he always had it properly serviced and kept it in good nick, but reckons when he switched to gas it ran much smoother than it ever had on petrol. reckons it was always a little lumpy at idle. my experience with LPG has been the same. to do with a very even distribution and mixing of the gas into the air (gas mixing with gas) rather than a liquid vaporising and mixing with air (liquid mixing with gas).

Cheers.

There's a "cars" to go in there... in between rec. and fuel.

This was it if anyone was interested -

Quite tidy. The usual bit's of corrosion where the rear doors met the rear wheel arch on one side and had been repaired on the other. Rear wiper did'nt sweep and the drivers window juddered but other than that not bad. All the electrics worked...could'nt vouch for the cruise because I did'nt take it out.

I think =A34k is top's now - escpecially with no Service History and I can't find the LPG installer who did it.

The hunt for a TD5 goes on.....
