EFi problem

Can anyone offer any ideas on the following with this problem with a Disco 3.9i (96), If engine is allowed to idle for longish periods, say, stuck in traffic, and then left for about half an hour, engine will not start but floods heavily, the only recourse is to remove the fuel pump fuse and try to start with foot hard down on accelerator. Engine will eventually start and run then die as flood is cleared. replacing fuse then enables engine to start correctly.



Breakdown recovery suggested temperature sensors so I have replaced both fuel and water sensors, but the original ones were still within required tolerances, new items have not cured problem.



Test book diagnosis was unable to find a problem, but the engine was not allowed to 'heat soak' as before.



Incidentally, cold starts and normal warm starts seem perfectly normal, its only when the engine has got really warmed up and then left.



Any ideas greatly appreciated.

well, you have to get the fault to recur on test...

but off the top of me 'ead... there's the idle speed compensation thing, but I can't really see how that affects it.

my guess would be something in the cold start system.

I'm thinking fuel pressure regulator being affected by the heat and causing an overfuel situation on restart... I may be wrong though. Only components that can alter the mixture and make it run rich on a hotwire system are as follows in no real order.

  1. Temp sensors (cheap, replaced already)
  2. Fuel pressure regulator at rear of plenum.
  3. Airflow meter (expensive)
  4. ECU (even more expensive)
  5. Vacuum leaks, either at pipes or gaskets, but would probably show up continuously.
  6. Leaking injectors (very expensive)

Thanks for the suggestions, I have noticed that the Airflow meter plug actually rests against the washer bottle, its been like that from new, and I'm just wondering if theres a wire broken.

Will investigate further
