Eh? - 90 Steering Box removal

Well Ill be bu@@ered if I can work it out. Yes I am a dunce when it comes to this stuff.

Two things I can not do/

  1. Not having a balljoint separtor, and never seeing a ball joint come apart before I dunno how to do it. The Haynes manual is useless. Can I split this with said tool.

  1. On the bottom of the steering box, where it connects to the drop arm, Ive now sussed that you have to bend up the washer to get to the bolt, but it bloody wont budge for toffy!!!

I was hoping I could remove the bolt on the bottom of the sterring box and let the drop arm off, still connected at the ball joint and remove the box that way.

Can I?

Hi,

I don't know if you are talking about a PAS box. I had to replace mine on a

110 defender because it was leaking, and it comes off with the drop arm.

This then leaves you to get the drop arm off the box, which for me was a real struggle. Like you said you have to bend flat the locking washer, then remove the nut. The arm was still stuck on pretty good with the box I replaced. I needed to use a puller and heat the thing. Eventually, with lots of not so gentle persuasion it came off.

If it doesn't you could always take it to a garage that has an hydraulic puller.

Anyway, good luck!

The easiest way I find to get a ball joint off is to get two 4lb lump hammers and hit both sides of the arm where the shaft goes through, this has done the trick each time for me. It don't work on the drop arm though.

If its like the one I tried to remove off the disco I had forget it. Although its called a drop arm it won't drop off!!! You apparently need the biggest most powerfull hydraulic puller you can find and wing it up to full pressure then retire for the night and wait for the big bang.

The ball joint consists of a bolt (with the top mounted in the moving 'ball' bit) that goes through a hole in the linkage below, and is held together with a nut on the bottom. The problem is that the bolt (which is smooth - not threaded) where it goes though the hole siezes in place. You need to take the nut off the bottom, and then persuade the bolt to move up out of the hole..

The ball joint seperator that i have is a wedge shaped tool (like a chisel) with a split in the middle. The idea is that you hammer it in between the 2 parts you want to seperate and it pushes them apart. Its a simple sounding job, but it can be hard work to do (and it knackers the rubber gaitor). I think that you can buy somewhat fancier ball joint seperators that do the job a bit better!

You might be able to find something else that you can hit or lever it apart with. Sometimes they just come apart after you hit them upwards a few times (if you are very lucky from my experience!). I've used a G-clamp before and clamped it on the steering arm and the bottom of the bolt and just wound it tight to move the bolt up and out.

Good luck!
