Engine oil change checks

I am now the proud owner of a 2008 Disco 2.7 Diesel. I have to say I am very pleased with it and intend to look after it.

It is still in warranty and part of the deal was that it would be serviced at a LR dealer and the book stamped.

In the past I have always maintained all my vehicles and never fail to change the oil regularly. I had my last disco for 16years.

Having taken a look at the oil in my new disco it does not look that clean to me assuming it has been changed.

Yes I know that it usually gets a bit discoloured by the remnants of the old oil in the sump.

Two questions.

Is there some way of getting a check done on the oil to prove it has / has not been changed.

The service I had stamped in the book was a service B 29541mls. The oil service check box has not been ticked. Not sure if service B automaitcally includes an oil change.

The previous service was a service A at 17797mls.

I am having real problems trying to locate service information such as oil change intervals.

I am planning to go back to the garage to enquire but before that I would be interested in getting some advice here.

I have had no dealings with them and it is probably OTT but they may be worth a call. They chifly analyse oil from big kit to see what is wearing in the engine but they should be able to analyse thing like residual detergent, deterioration in viscosity improvers and soot contamination.

The quickest and cheapeast solution is to trust no-one and change the oil regardless. Or even get them to change it for free! Be honest, you're not going to be happy unless you've done so anyway.

Oil analysis is fine for fleet users trying to reduce lubricant costs to the minimum whilst at the same time keeping an eye open for incipient problems: it's not for you and me. It is, as Andrew suggests, OTT just to avoid the cost of a fill of oil and won't give you any feeling of real 'comfort'.

Diesels dirty their oil very quickly and it is quite possible that nothing is amiss. But I have a feeling that you, like me, don't agree with the current move to grossly extended oil change intervals. I was a confirmed 3000mi changer (2.25/3.5/300Tdi) but have dragged myself to

5000mi for the TD5 - that's quite enough for the average type of use.

Get a blank copy of the service check list from the dealer - it was in RAVE for the earlier models: I wouldn't know where to look for this model.

I'm much happier with the 16,000 intervals, considering the astounding price of the oil my RR prefers :(
