This is clearly a newbie question, but where is the oil check and drain plugs on the main gearbox in my 200tdi defender, and do I use the 'hatch' under the middle seat, or is it from underneath?
It's started really crunching into 2nd whilst on the move, so I'm thinking me oil is low...........or hoping it is anyway !
When mine started to do that shortly after buying it and within the
3-month warranty, the dealer replaced the box with a recon unit, so watch yourself on that one. IIRC reverse started to get unhappy too.
Note that it can crunch a little when the box is cold, mine's never really done that but it has been somewhat stiff in the mornings but loosens up after a few miles.
No problem, nobody was born knowing where the plugs are.
but where is the oil check and drain
a similar arrangement. The drain plug is at the bottom on the right hand side. The filler/level plug is about a third of the way up on the right hand side.
WARNING!!! The fill/level plug is tapered and if it has been overtightened in the past, can be a pig to remove. Therefore, *make sure* you can get it out BEFORE you drain the oil. Otherwise, you will have to turn the vehicle upside down to refill it. This will spoil your day.
On the earlier LT77 box (reverse beside 1st) the filler has a regular square head. The later R380 (reverse opposite 5th) has a TorqX type plug and you will need to find a suitable tool to undo it. You may need to use a long breaker bar to shift it if somebody's overcooked it.
Hint: to remove the square LT77 filler plug; a 12 point 5/16 Whitworth socket is a perfect fit.
You mean, you drained the oil and it wouldn't fill a teacup? It's more scary when you drain the engine and only a couple of pints come out. Note that the LT77 takes ATF (Automatic transmission fluid) not gearbox oil. 4.7 pints, you'll need.
Steady on, you'll be putting your mechanic out of business ;-)
square bit for the ratchet? funny I thought the plug was 1/2" in which case just a short extention would do the biz or just a bare ratchet if you mind your fingers Derek
