Points are the devils spawn! I detest points! They have produced many a mispent hour under the bonnet.

It's only a matter of practise - points are easy once you've done a few hundred sets. I'm sure a few of the more experienced mechanics here will agree.

That said I really do enjoy electronic ignition, but that's down to sheer laziness.

I get a much stronger spark from the Mallory dizzy that Tim fitted to burrt, which has two sets of points, than many seem to get from electronic setups. That said, the points for it aren't cheap, at £20 a set, and if you fit any other condensor than the mallory one (about £10 each!!!), they last about 10 seconds!

The twin points set up is designed to give increased dwell angle. They are a right royal PITA to set up properly, but once you have them right they last well. If I was going to spend that sort of money on a distributor I' go electronic though - less hassle (and if anything a better spark) for much the same cost.

I suspect my woes stem from worn dizzy shaft and on one occasion a grub screw that slackened it's self enough to allow the points to close a tad but not sufficient to tell what was going on initially.

I felt quite experienced by the time I'd finished. Experienced enough to know they are the devils spaw. New kit is fine but as I worked alot with old kit on a shoe string when I were a lad you made good with what you could.

I fitted a Sierra electronic ignition to the Jaguar lump in the IIa and never looked back. Cost me about £3 but the dizzy was set up already from a scrap engine.

If I'd sent my motors in to a garage to have all the work I've ever done on them I doubt very much I'd be in the position I am now. Experienced or not I can take quite a bit of pride in that. I've also got many stranded motorists going with minimal tools whilst at work.....tsk!

:-)
