Intercoolers

Just been offered a stonking great big intercooler to chuck in front of the radiator on my 300TDI. Does the assembled masses think this would cause cooling problems for the radiator, its about the same size as the rad and existing intercooler, and about 75mm thick. It will physically fit, but I hae concerns as to the cooling effcency of the rad if i chuck this in front. Although I assume the air will pass through without too much problem?

Thanks

Tony

Nothing's definite ... but mine's a 300Tdi Disco and I often run a muff over the front of the radiator to help when laning in deep water and have never had over heating issues. If the rad is in reasonable condition I can't see a problem. Adding larger intercoolers is a good way to potentially increase power and is done by a few companies.

It will be fine.

The only issue you may have is with actually adding alittle turbo lag into the equation, as the little blower suddenly now has ~5 times the volume of intake to pressurise before the engine feels it, but once on boost the advantages outweigh the dis's.

I've got one on my 300TDi Defender, it covers the radiator entirely, have had that for close to 9 years now, no overheating problems other than when I caked the whole thing solid with mud and drove home. It was quite easy to clean with a straight hosepipe pressed up against the intercooler to push the water through both the intercooler and rad. Despite a lot of off-roading I never did it that bad again. The engine runs slightly lower than mid-point on the heat gauge.

Have you adjusted the injector pump as well, or do you just have the larger intercooler, what difference in performance have you noticed. Have you made any other tuning mods.

Thanks

I didn't fit it, it was fitted by someone who knows how to set up the pump afterwards but he did say he'd be adjusting it. And yes it's got a lot more go now, and can easily cruise at 80, much better than it was.
