MOT Advisory Notice for TD4

'01 Freelander TD4 (88k miles) passed MOT today but I was given an Advisory Notice, namely ''Vehicle emits white smoke. This is not a reason for rejection but should be looked into''.

I have never noticed any white smoke, and none was evident when I did a service about 10 days ago. I did rev the car a fair bit when I got home and didn't see any white smoke then either .... what very little smoke I did see was nearer black.

The MOT smoke Test was

Peak1 ........... 2.33 m-1, Peak2 ....... 2.06m-1, Peak3 ...... 1.93m-1

Any ideas what they may be on about.

Richard uttered summat worrerz funny about:

Check your water levels. It could be steam from a failed head gasket, if the waters has all gone it could be about to become another on the long list pf Freebie head failures.

Other than that White / blue smoke is usually associated with oil burning so keep an eye on oil levels. I've also seen white some when engines are sucking in air which again could be head gasket or loose injectors but they are usually evident.

More than likely the diesel pre heater- the exhaust is just infront of the N/S/F road wheel.

Could even have been condensation in the exhaust just clearing itself. TD4's aren't reknowned for having head gasket issues the same as the 1.8's are, if all levels are ok (and staying ok!) I'd not be getting too worried about it. Badger.

Doubtful, that only kicks in when ambient temp is below 5 degrees or so

That's with the K series engine, not the TD4. The K is notorious for head gasket failure.

Did you try revving it like they have to in a MOT test, i.e. foot straight to the floor till the engine reaches maximum revs. White smoke is likely to be unburnt diesel, which could be emitted during the test, but not normal driving. If it is not causing any problems during normal driving, then I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Thanks for inputs chaps ....... levels are ok and I will keep a keener eye on smoke emission. BTW I only revved up to the red range on the rev counter not foot to the floor as they do in test. I think I will skip the latter and just concentrate on normal driving.

It's a diesel - it shouldn't be possible to over-rev it through free revving.

Thanks for that info .... so I had a go.

A friend put 'foot to the floor' while I looked for exhaust 'smoke'. There was a small amount emitted (lasted about 1 or 2 secs) and wasn't what I would describe as white .... but seemed over this short time to move towards black and then clear. So I don't know what the MOT tester (see original post) was on about.
