oil again...

Just picked up some oil for the motors, so I'm in a position to report on the spec and price:

Brand: Q8 T-170 grade: 15W40 API: SJ/CH-4 ACEA: A3, B3, E3 MB: 228.3

and a raft of others.

25 litre drum

GBP 24.50 plus vat at 17.5% = 28.78 total.

Right, that's it - I'm moving to the UK. The best price I could manage here for 20 litres of summat similar was about 40 quid. And that involved twisting the seller's arm something shocking too.

On second thoughts..... I'm paying about 37p/litre for diesel, and

55p/litre for petrol so I guess it's all swings and roundabouts - but I'm still getting rooked for oil.

Richard - are your prices anything like this? :)

I can't remember if you are from NZ or Oz (please don't be offended either way) but you will probably find that the extra cost involves some sort of built in disposal fee?

Just a whacky thought but I know that Oz at least, is very environmentally concious so I would not be supprised to find that were the case?

Regards Stephen

PS would you really be willing to put up with UK weather for a bit of cheap oil and possibly cheaper landy spares?

It seems these days that even if you enter a mainline retail store you are confronted by a whole host of options for oil.

So, if you have to buy your oil in 'single service' quantity and are restricted to the brands offered in the more common retail outlets what is the best oil for a Freelander TD4?

I'm in NZ. The country presents a nice 'green' image to the world but is incapable of actually doing much in the way of environmentally friendly legislation. There's no recycling fee included - when I first had my workshop I had to pay to get the waste oil taken away. Now there's a company that's filtering it and using it as heating oil who will collect it for free if you have a minimum of 400 litres. But for the avearge bloke who wants to dispose of a few litres of used oil there aren't many options. The high price is just the oil companies taking the piss with their pricing because there's bugger all real competition and we're too far from anywhere for it to be worth importing oil privately.

And probably the exact same high specification as the Q8. The Morris oil is far more widely available in most of the UK.

Just checked Wilkinsons today, their own brand diesel oil to ACEA B2 is 7.99 for a handy 5 litre pack. Their even cheaper oils are not given specs so I'd avoid them like the plague but their 20/50 at 2.50 for 5 litres might do nicely as a flushing oil!

On or around Fri, 18 Nov 2005 10:41:16 +0000 (UTC), "Richard" enlightened us thusly:

Morris's sell smaller cans as well, if you can find an outlet. Having said that unless you literally have nowhere to keep it, the saving gained from buying 25l at a time is well worth it. I just used 6l or a tad more in an oil-change for the minibus, and the disco is due an oil change as well, which will use about the same again, and 25l doesn't last long...

Castrol is reasonably reliable, although more expensive.
