V8 engine oil

i used the 10/40 part synthetic from Halfords (big greenish bottles 5 ltr) in my 3.9, no ill effects from what I can make out, although I do change the oil at around 3k in mine because of previous mistreatment

On my 100k V8 P38 I did my 3-4k routine oil & filter change last bank holiday weekend. I used Castrol GTX 15w/40 "for engines over 75,000 miles" whatever that means. The following Thursday on a trip from London to Chichester my engine shattered a piston. No warnings, drama, overheating, smoke or water loss just a nasty noise that at first sounded like cam/followers knocking. New engine ordered and on the way! Coincidence?

I used a semi synthetic 15/40 from a retailer in New Mills about £9 /5litre branded Vauxhall kit pity you have to use Ha;frauds I've not noticed their pricing policy as being competitive against real motor factors. Derek

good 20W50 or 15W50 is best. The 50 part is most important. I'd not run a pre-serpentine belt one on anything much thinner, from choice. Good 20W50 is getting hard to find though, I've got a tin of Halford's green 20W50 which is fine for the series III, but probably not all that good quality.

ideally, you want API SG or higher - but 20W50 with that standard is even harder to find. 15W50 is getting more difficult too. 's down to all the modern engines that run on gnat's piss oil.

Morris lubricants do quite a good 20W50.

almost certainly, but any 40 "hot" rating is a bit thin for most of the V8s.

Disco II and later RR with the "4.0" engine will run OK on thinner oil.

Which oil for my NEW 4.6 lump do you recommend o wise ones??

All my Land Rovers seem to have gone well on Castrol. I think I bought Magnatec last time and the RRC engine hasn't used a drop in 6000 miles. Shame that it leaks from the diff and transfer box at such a rate then really!

decent stuff and whatever spec the book says. It'll prolly spec either an API or ACEA code for the oil - generally, exceeding the required spec is not a problem except with brake fluid, if you get it wrong: DOT 5 is not an upgrade on DOT 4, whereas DOT 5.1 is. DOT 5 is silicon fluid and not to be mixed. Just to make life nice and simple...

I don't have the specs for the 4.6 motor but I expect they're in the handbook. mostly, with engine oil, better spec is better especially for modern engines. API system has SF, SG, SH, SJ, and so on, I think up to SL now, for spark ignition engines and a matching set CE, CF, CG, CH etc. for compression ignition.

ACEA go A2, A3, B2, B3 and I think E2, E3... I forget what they all mean but generally they advance in a logical manner. I think at least some of the ACEA have dates as well, like A2:96

If you look at the LR site they seem to recommend everything from 5w30 to 10w60

I use the standard Land Rover oil, it's about 12 quid a gallon from my local Landy specialist.

I've just bought Unipart green 20/50 for my 2.5 na/D 90 don't fancy putting magnatec in it.

That's the stuff, V8s love it, Part No GUL7005, used to be GGL400. Obviously they are still selling it then, I wasn't sure.
