OT: saab gearchange problem

the wifes saab has gone a bit funny on the gearchange. all the gears feel to be too far to the left, and there is not enough travel available to get into first or second on the far left. however knocking the gearlever all the way to the right and then going for first agressivly usually gets it, though my wife can't manage it.

Anyone have any idea on this one?

No idea at all, but it sounds like an ideal opportunity to buy her a LR. . . . . . ;-)

I heard that! :)

What sort of saab is it?. If its an old 900, or a 99, I've been recently getting pretty familiar with them (I own 5 saabs now..).

If it is one of those, then it could be the linkage between the gearbox and the lever. at one point theres only a glorified jubilee clip holding it together. Having just taken an engine and gearbox out, I know its there!. I suppose that could have become loose and slipped round slightly so that your lever doesnt line up with the gearbox properly? Its never happenend to me, but i suppose it could. Other than that, It could be the gearbox itself, or the base of the lever i suppose...

I have some pictures of mine (I spent many hours trying to remove it!), so if its the right sort of car then I can let you see them.

Ive found the forums on

to be the best place for anything saabish. There are other forums and ng's around, but none of em are as good or busy as saabcentral. Theres specialised forums for each model there too

Yes I am ashamed to admit that I know this one.

Well maybe

The linkage has a rubber joint in it. the bonding on one side of this rubber block will have failed. to look at it will be fine, but when you put pressure on it from one direction it the rubber just pulls away from its backing and does not transfer the movement to the rest of the linkage.

Not too bad a job to do either

Good luck.

view from underneath. engine on left. Car is the big red bit!. That may be a slightly different design to the rubber bit on Mr Nice's car as thats the one on my 1980 saab, but it does the same job.

Its an easy job if you can succesfully 'tap' (haynes manual wording) that tapered bolt thingy on the LHS out. I can't get mine to shift even when i tap it with a big hammer.

Assuming that its a 9000, then the flexible joint has failed in the gear linkage.

Put it up on ramps, and look from underneath between the engine and the bulkhead, you will see a rubber block with 2 studs coming out of either side. This block fails, and allows the play in the linkage.

Fairly easy to remove, 4 of 10mm nuts, but if I remember correctly, the block is not cheap.

it's a 1990 saab 9000, I'm hoping it's the linkage somewhere, as I can probably fix that..

They should do. They can still get bits for 900's, and the 9000 is newer.

There are a few web based saab parts places who might be cheaper. they dont list that part on the site, but if you fill in the quote bit they will most likely be able to get it for you. Elkparts usually answer their quotes within minutes!
