Range Rover P38 transfer box

Have a whining and slight knocking seemingly from the front driveline on my P38, suspected the diff, but I've found there's some up/down play in the front output flange of the transfer box. Everything else seems fine. I'm guessing the bearing's failing, but so far the oil seal is still holding. The manual shows how to change the oil seal, but not the bearing. Does anyone know if this can be done with the transfer box in place? Looks like the viscous coupling housing can be removed with the bearing fairly easily, a ring of 6 bolts after the flange is removed?

Yes that will work.

Remember to replace both the bearing and race. The bearing will have to be pressed off and a new one fitted. Race will need to be extracted and carefully hammered back into position (typically using the old bearing).

Excellent! Thanks Jack. Didn't want to remove the transfer box, it's a bit heavy when lying on your back under the car. Does the chassis cross-member have to come out though? Looks like it's a bit tight to get the housing past it?
