Range Rover P38a ignition coils

One of the ignition coils has just failed on my '98 4.6HSE Range Rover. I'm not sure if these are one of those items among many that usually fail on this model? Has anyone heard of these failing before? The second coil from left is producing no sparks and has a rather neat burnt hole on the top near the turret. Unfortunately land Rover only sell the whole set for £400 :( Can get them cheaper from Rimmer Brothers, but hopefully my used car waranty will cover it.

I have heard of it being a problem, not in a major way but they're not one of those things that will always last the life of the car.

Condolences...

I don't know what would be involved in changing them but....

The ignition coils on yours are only available in sets of 4. The later type comes in two blocks of 2 coils and cost 40 quid a block (ish) each and are available individually. The mounting bracket is another 20 quid so IF you can replace the older type with the later type you can do the whole lot for around 100 quid genuine parts.

Coil part number is ERR6045 (2 coils, 4 HT outputs) The complete assembly (2 x ERR6045 and the mounting bracket) is ERR6566

It is not uncommon for one of them to fail BTW.

I have no idea if it's practical to fit the newer style but I doubt they are electrically very different from the old style. The main problem might be physical space but when you are saving 300 quid in parts it might be worth a bit of messing about.

I have managed to get the car booked in and have the work done under warranty, but the company are not Land Rover experienced.....ho hum. The warranty company will only pay £24.50 an hour labour, so the local Land Rover dealer won't touch it unless I pay the bill first then try to claim back (and they charge £78.50). At least the parts will get replaced for free anyhow. Anyone know if the BeCOM would of registered a fault? The exhaust gas was smelling very rich. Will I need to get the faults cleared from the computer, or will it remain even though the lamda sensors are now telling it the mixture has returned to normal? It was obviously throwing unburnt petrol/air mix out of one cylinder on each bank.

Looking through the workshop and parts manuals, I don't think there is enough room to mount the later coils to the earlier engine, they are located to the rear of the plenum chamber, the later coils look much bigger.

Cheers,

Alan C.

That's ridiculous. I don't know any garage which charges that little, round here at least. Even the grubby little place in the village which bent my CB aerial charges £38 per hour.

My local independent LR workshop charge A$70 per hour (or the equivalant of about 20 McDonalds Big Macs) - that's £27 per hour to you.
