Re: How sustainable is a 101?

Yep, but try to steer away from 900x16 bargrips (if you'll excuse the >pun). These have superb offroad capability for their type, but >exhibit a remarkable teflon like property on the slightest of moist >road surfaces!

I'll vouch for that. It was chucking it down outside and I nearly had a little puddle of my own at my feet.

An interesting side effect of driving a 101 in driving rain though, the cold rain hitting the front panel was keeping my feet cool. The effect was quite pronounced, perhaps I should have gone faster to cool the entire cabin?

All the best

More detail?

I've not used them, but a fair appraisal may help others.

Neither do I, now. That was paycheque July 2004 as I recall :-)

What's the overall wear like on the Petla?

Martyn you really are a tart....(no offence tarts!)...putting overalls on your tyres eh... next you'll be wire brushing the internals of your exhaust.

I suppose they would be size XL

(Michelin XL gettit!)

;-)

As for slippy Bargrips..I've had no problems with the set on Morph....we've done a few miles now...but then I don't think the tyres on my Granada Scorpio squeak much either...next I'll be going bald.

My Peltas are stacked up waiting for the bar grips to wear out.....which at this rate should be in around 3 years.

I think you'd class me as mad if I also told you I wash them and use a 'comfort' rinse, low spin and no tumble dry. Makes the rubber come up a right treat ;-)

Yep, that's one thing that you can say for sure. The bargrips which came with Grumble were probably the ones it was let out of Lode Lane with in 1977. I don't think that the quality of the rubber is anywhere near what it used to be these days.

Dunno, I've only done about 1000km since I had em. It broke down about a month after I fitted the new rubber.

Somehow I can see Martyn crouching round the back end of Grumble with a bottle brush and a bucket of soapy water, muttering away to himself......

One question...... How do you know when your bar-grips are worn out? I'm working on the assumption that when I see wire/canvas/string/whatever then they'll need replacing. With so little tread, i find it difficult to measure it sensibly.

In defence of bar-grips, I managed to get my rear inside wheel airborne recently while heavy braking on a tight roundabout, and that was in a loaded ambi (Right outside Hampton Court palace for full effect).. So the fronts must have some grip...

1.2mm tread depth across the central 2/3 of the tyre (from memory) It's difficult to tell with bargrips, particuarly as the older ones don't have wear blocks.

Basically, if they look smooth, change em.....

current rules are, I think, 1.5mm over the centre 3/4, plus visible tread on the remaining area.

I think large commercials are allowed 1mm too, and bikes :-)

hmmmm. I understood that it had to have a visible remnant of tread.

tsk. added up the ratings on the big trailer's tyres, they don't add up to enough to carry 2 ton on it. Although the trailer is more'n strong enough. It's actually rated to carry 1480 Kg I think...
