Rear Cross Member - 110

Hi

I have a 1983 110 V8 County. The rear cross member appears sound except on the near side where 2 holes have appeared below the bumperette (is that the right term?). Is it worth replacing the whole cross member (and any ideas what it might cost), or is it 'safe' to patch it?

Regards

Not really very easy to patch it well, and the holes show that the rest of it is going to be thin and weak as well.

New ones with extensions come in at about 130 quid. Cost maybe 250 quid to fit it, depends a lot on who does it and how many shortcuts they take - I'd try and get a qualified welder to do it if possible as opposed to a mechanic as it's a metalwork job (apart from the wiring in the rear o/s leg which you'll have to deal with).

A properly welded one will see you ok for a good few years though. Make sure that rear chassis rails are good enough to weld the cross member extensions onto as well.

Oh, and don't use the jack supplied with your vehicle if that crossmember has extra holes :(

Just to clarify, the 110 rear cross member with extensions goes right up to the fuel tank crossmember (around 28? inches) and great care must be taken when fitting it that the anti-roll bar (if fitted) and the tank will fit afterwards - its a bugger of a job!

Can't be bothered going out and measuring, but that sounds about right!

Good point. I was inspecting a friend's newly purchased 90 which had had a new crossmember/extensions recently added so had completely forgotten about the extra nonsense you have with the 110 s/w when I wrote that.

So add in the fun of dropping the fuel tank as well and add a bit more onto the labour - I was thinking of the 90 when guestimating the cost :(
