Dexron III but best is MTF94 (suspect Texaco and honda are same spec), gives a significant improvement in gearchange, ATF isn't really upto the job. Look at Difflocks Evo 1 MTF for some good advice.

i run dexron ll or ll in mine , the thinner it is the better the gearchanges youll get ..

ATF is ok also but that is mainly a ford oil .

ALL vegetable derived auto transmission fluids are designed so they can be mixed with eachother . dexron is for general motors vehicles , it has a softer shift in auto boxes. ATF has a harder sharper shift . a lot of drag racers use ATF .

Dexron *is* ATF. ATF is not necessarily Dexron. Any old ATF was not recommended in LR boxes in guises other than Dexron. This has now been superseded by MTF type oil and this is backward compatible with and preferable to Dexron.

ATF ist "Automatic Transmission Fluid" and nothing else.

ATF today could be taken as Dexron I whereas Dexron II and Dexron III are derivates with different but similar characteristics.

It's easy to tell what the wrong oil is if you use it. I found it almost impossible to engage 2nd gear until the oil - believed to have been autobox-spec ATF - had warmed up. Had the local LR dealer to change it (because it was convenient) with whatever it was they used and everything was fine again. I would give your local dealer a ring and ask what they use.

Autobox spec ATF is what it's supposed to be. Since that's what ATF (be it Donax, Dexron or wotever) is.

It's common to put synthetic SAE75 in, which is a bit thicker, and can result in heavy gearchanges when cold, but makes for smoother operation when hot, IME. The sticky gearchange only lasts for the first mile or so.
