The Gap Road is only open until 15th October. Talybont lanes and Sarn Helen are okay - was there recently.

Hi John - see my link below to the South West Wales LRC - we'll be going on those roads during the forthcoming season!

Whats the score on the "Gap" end of the gap road? If driven before 15th Oct can you legally drop down to the tarmac lane before it? Or is the gap now drivable? (It always was i suspose just not in the sort of landrover i had!) Also is Talybont badly tram lined, thinking of driving it in a 110 county with mainly road tyres & suspension that could do with some new springs. Sarn Helen always used to be ok as its so rocky.

depends which bit of Sarn Helen. There's Sarn Helen all the way from Glyn Neath up to Beddgelert or thereabouts :-)

the bottom end from Glyn Neath upwards (Resolven/Rheola rally stages area) was hard and stony last time I looked, however I recall some magazine doing it some years back and finding a bit in the forestry where the forestry lot had carved it up into 4'-size ruts with serious swamp... further up it falls into Dyffryn Cellwen open cast, and then re-appears somewhere around the brecon beacons area. No specific info, sorry.

If you fancy meeting up for a coffee or something, let me know when you're likely to be around. I'm between Lampeter and Llandovery.

looking at the maps for my area, there's a dearth of BOATs, these days - there are a few around here; but I gather from talking to some folk that the idiots have raised a good deal of local antipathy to the "off-roaders", by driving lanes they shouldn't and deviating off across the fields where the going looks a bit nasty. Buggrem. Talking to locals, I'd be reluctant to organise anything too large-scale in this area at the moment - I have to live here :-(

It's a shame that some people seem not to give a toss, and spoil the fun for the rest of us.

there's a nice track across from Ffair Rhos/Teifi Pools over to Claerwen Reservoir, but I don't think it was ever a proper BOAT - I drove it once in me old series 2, about 15 year ago...

You can do the Gap Road in it's entirety on road tyres - my Disco has Pirelli Scorpion ST's and coped without any difficulty. Likewise Talybont and Sarn Helen. The gully at the southern end of the Gap Road can be a bit of a challenge if it's wet but if you use the correct techniques then a 110 will manage it.

There are plenty of ruts on the Talybont lanes but not too bad. If it's wet then you might want to try to keep out of some of them but in the dry they're fine.

soddit that sounds silly. I meant, are you talking about 10 vehicles, or 10 people, and if so how many vehicles? we have a field, but I don't think Mother (not Martyn) would necessarily approve of 10 vehicles in it. Mind you, a contribution to funds could be a significant factor. Also, it depends when; I might be able to arrange to cut the remaining grass (which would be the main objection) and for it to be fed to the goats, but that would take a while as it has to be done a bit at a time.

You will HAVE to drive the routes in two separate convoys - to keep the locals happy.

We will split into 2 or maybe three groups, but, we are looking for somewhere to meet up for a Saturday evening. If anyone has some land close to the lanes in south Wales & wants a little extra income in return for 10 landrovers parked for the evening please post here or email direct.
