welding chassis and strength

hiya,



just in the process of welding a half chassis onto my series, and was slightly unnerved at the gauge of the half chassis to go on.



i got it from paddocks and is a tad on the thin side.



i dont know if anyone out there has done the same but i was wondering how strong the chassis will be after welding it and puting everything back,



i go off road regularly and sometimes you just have to give it what for , to get over them hills, thru that mud whatever.



im not awfully convinced it will be as strong ast before, but that maybe just me wickling,



so does anyone have any experience of this.

provides some very useful advice on chassis welding in the truckingindustry and is more than relevant for a Landy.

We get them from the same source as Paddocks, and have fitted quite a few and sold a lot more - no complaints so far!

I've a vague memory of the LR chassis (and I daresay that this was a series one) being 14 gauge. which is about 2mm. Dunno about the 110.

bear in mind that you have 2 thicknesses, i.e. one either side of the box section, and also that the strength of the chassis is mostly down to its structure, not the amount of material. If you doubt this, then play with a bit of aluminium foil - a single sheet of aluminium foil is about as weak as a piece of metal can be, but fold it so that it's a useful structure, it multiplies the bending resistance in the plane it's folded many times. The easiest is a corrugated concertina shape: /\/\/\/\/\ like that.

materials are fun...

I welded patches of 2mm steel on to the 110 chassis for the MOT, at which the local garage bloke said "you might have put something decently thick on it". Little does he know how thick the existing chassis is :-) but more to the point, that's about the correct thickness. welding 1/8" plate onto it would be OTT and pointless. Making a whole chassis out of 1/8" would make it getting on for twice the weight, and would probably add about half a ton to the weight of the vehicle. OK, quarter of a ton. lots, anyway.
